plentiful weekend

whee. sis came home. sydney pictures now in hand! MCE remote also in hand! :D saturday was spent in Shah Alam at her UiTM convocation. grats to her for getting the Vice Chancellor's Award, and grats to her on her Bank Negara scholarship.

sunday saw me started on my two washing machine intake project. while i've assembled all the parts a few times (acquired from Home-Fix) it's still incomplete cuz it still leaks despite the amount of Teflon i put on it. was supposed to try again today, but then i found this: http://timewarp.sourceforge.net/. me and azuan will be online more often now. :P

i was also fiddling with my MCE remote, trying to get it to work with MediaPortal. so far, i've tried a few configurations, but can't quite get what i want exactly. MediaPortal natively supports the remote, but since my pc is not a full htpc yet, there's no way to run/invoke MediaPortal in the first place. on the other hand, i can install HIP with the MCE remote plugin, but that means i'll have to reset the MediaPortal key assignments. so close, yet so far.

at the same time, i'm also fiddling with the remote's PC on/off button, which lets me put the PC on S3 standby mode via the remote, but so far i'm having trouble getting the PC back on again (well, it turns on, but as a complete boot instead of a resume from standby). Research shows i might have some non-ACPI compliant drivers, so i need to try and unplug as many devices as possible and see if the problem persists. if it does, it might mean a windows xp reinstall. we'll see how it goes.

S3 standby is desired for HTPCs because it lets your computer standby with minimal current. everything is turned off including fans, except your RAM which needs to store your session data before the suspend. It's basically similar to the Hibernate feature, but with your data in RAM rather than the hard drive. both types are actually part of ACPI.

so that XP reinstall is very possible. cuz how cool is it to be able to turn on and off your pc with a remote? :D

[ edit ]

because TimeWarp is such a huge download, and i only want to play the SuperMelee component, i'm going to get its TW-Light version instead.

gnome 2.14 + 768mb memory = no no

server performance has been pretty bad as of late. i've been running portupgrade over the past few days to get all my programs updated to their latest versions. actually, it was mainly to fix the Scanerss plugin for Azureus that seemed to require the latest version of Java SWT, but that didn't work.

anyways, i'm now at Gnome 2.14. and i didn't read the upgrade FAQ. :P and i think my dependencies are shot (i just select the first option in pkgdb -F without realising there are others). so the server is pretty bloated right now. every morning i find the server running out of swap space, and i'm not sure what causes it. guess it's time to take out that 256MB ram and replace it with my spare 2GB set.

mom and i are still in cold war mode. oh well.

people problems

how do you tell a grown up that his coming late to work, his sleeping at the office, and his constant disappearing acts are not appreciated?

or since his behavior is rather childish, we can treat him the same way you discipline a child? or perhaps some quick counseling will suffice?

annoyed

it's been a long day. you wanna get home. although it wasn't all that bad, and the mood was still good.

the drive home takes approximately 1 1/2 hours. no problem. lots of chit chat along the way. so far so good.

then we get to a jammed junction near sunway. it's a shortcut. we cut in. she keeps talking, telling me to look out for this and that. fine.

then i was a little slow in closing the gap in front of me. a car cuts in. not so fine anymore. she starts chiding me, condescendingly mocking my driving. why am i so slow? why did i let the car in? grrr.

so just to continue the conversation in a lighter tone, i replied that the girl in the passenger seat was staring at me and i just stared back. then she starts attacking that fact, saying i'm easily distracted, saying things that make you feel like the whole day of keeping her company was a damned waste of time. telling me how girls distract me so easily, and how i've lost my Iman. and she keeps going on and on while i'm trying to negotiate lane switches because this car that just cut in was just acting fuctup.

so i snapped. just because i let one car cut in doesn't mean i'm a bad driver. heck, if you think my driving is so bad, go drive yourself to some remote kampung in selangor. why make me haul myself there, wanting to help you out since you're soooo old and helpless and all that, then start nagging me like i don't deserve to be in the driver's seat?

and while we're on the subject of iman, maybe i already have gone down the wrong path. maybe i'm doomed to go to hell and burn for eternity. yeah, that girl took one look into my eyes and sucked my soul out. please lah, she's not even that good looking. if i set my standards that low i might be hitched by now. and i thought you were worried about me still being single?

but you might be right. i am easily manipulated by the opposite sex. moms included.

games, games, games!

Happy Merdeka Day!

To celebrate, the gang and I took our machines to Bodhi Tree for a day of LAN fun! While it was supposed to start in the morning, I went to visit my dear cousin at SJMC, so I was rather late and missed a round of DotA. But the company's good, the food's good, and I still managed to clock in a few hours of DotA, and Midtown Madness 2. MM2 is old, but such a superbly fun game. I was playing with my face streaming with tears due to the constant laughter. It's too bad Microsoft didn't release MM3 for the PC.

Anyway, as part of finding an alternative for MM2, I'm on my way to acquire Micro Machines V4, which is basically.. racing those tiny cars across household terrains. I played the Micro Machines 2 demo a long time ago, and had some nice memories of it. Another game that I liked was Re-Volt, which lets you race RC cars. But if I recall correctly the network play was a little problematic.

During the LAN party, Az passed me a copy of Doukutsu Monogatari, which is a Japanese freeware RPG side-scroller game that was translated to English (i.e. Cave Story). So I got hooked and finished it today. :P While the graphics presentation is retro, the game design is awesome and attention was paid to detail like character animations and scroll effects. The plot is riveting, and is quite... adult. Adult as in you can expect elements as you would expect from adult fiction, minus the sex. :P And blood. :P Anyways, I loved the stereo soundtrack. Might just try to rip it.

Post LAN party: wedding in Gombak.

So it's (actually relative to this post, was) Saturday. My company finally adopted a 5-day week policy. No more wasting weekends at the office, yippie! Had lunch with Fish and Khay Hoi then mahjong then balik for Doukutsu and Crimsonland (survival score: 2.6m, just 200k shy of Fish's score).

The highlight of the day was having played MOHAA online with Fish. We used Hamachi to create a zero-configuration VPN (our network name is #bangsar, what else? :D). Hamachi works like most chat programs, except that its main purpose is to create virtual LANs. Yummy! That also means I can turn off my PvPGN server too, since Hamachi supports Warcraft III as well.

A list of Hamachi games connectivity guides can be found here.

Oz pics still en route. :P

return to chaos

i'm back. damn it's hot here. and sticky. water tastes more metallic. and there's work to be done on Monday. :O

it'll be a while before i manage to compile all my photos. i'll need them to recall what i've done and seen the past week. yes, i have short term memory loss. :P nazreen has yet to send me pictures taken via her T1 too.

anyways, sunday was indeed a very nice rest day. was in bed most of the time. downloaded silent hill overnight cuz i couldn't wait to see it, but now that i have, i'm rather shocked. i'll talk more abt that after the 'read more' link (spoiler alert!).

our arrival at klia on saturday night went pretty smooth. the baggage came out late, as usual, so we had a lot of time to look around the DFS shops. mom did a bit of shopping on the plane, and i had discouraged her to purchase a second item. only later did i feel guilty, for that thing would've been something to help her improve her health. remind me to look up 'cosamine' later.

fish arrived just on time to pick us up. since we didn't have much more luggage, it was the same arrangement as when we departed. we then brought back dinner from kfc, and watched part of the MU game.

anyways, i'm still feeling lethargic even after all the napping i did today. stupid neighbors and their stupid weekend hammering. really, some people just lack the decency to live in this world.

as a t-shirt my brother saw said: some people are simply alive because it's illegal to kill them.

i should've bought that.

back to the silent hill movie: i'm extremely apalled that they decided to kill off Cybil, and it such a gruesome manner. the poor thing. :( and generally, while the ambience is VERY captivating, somehow the whole package didn't come out quite right. really, these directors should know better than to mess with the original game's epic storylines. it's already hard enough to understand the game, let alone a 2 1/2 hr movie remake.

Alessa should be in a wheelchair,
characters from Silent Hill 2 should be in a sequel and not crammed into this movie,
Alessa's barb wire revenge is soooooo lame,
the limbo world concept sucks,
the characters should've retained their original names from the game, and
the movie ending kills the precedent for Silent Hill 3.

To sum it up: no justice at all. No on-screen justice for Resident Evil. Almost none as well for Silent Hill.

Thank God Spiderman is around to lighten up the season.

greetings from oz

Hey peeps. Things have been really great here in Sydney. We've covered lots of ground since touching down last Friday. Nowadays we're spending more time with my little sis, or tying up some loose ends like taking the OzTrek, going up Sydney Harbor, or taking a harbor cruise.

While originally we were thinking of going out of the City to cover the snowy mountains for some skiing or snowboarding, we didn't really plan it well enough, so we ended up just staying here. My brother and I have also managed to get an extension on our stay at Malaysia Hall Sydney, and the discounts really help a lot.

Anyways, will give the full shebang when I return. Pictures will take longer to put up, cuz they'll be stored on my sister's notebook and she'll have to transfer them over slowly. I've had to use 3 different cameras to take pics, and I think we have enough to make a really huge album.

Right now, I'm at my sister's place writing this entry, and wondering where my mom and my aunt are. Since we siblings went shopping for a printer this morning, the elderly ones went for a bit of shopping themselves at the QVB. While we were supposed to return to their hotel, we decided to just hang around the university here in Kingsford. It's tough when people don't return your messages or answer your calls. Getting a teeny bit worried.

Maybe a case of karma, cuz that was what happened the first night when MY phone died. Well, hopefully they're alright.

So, see you in a few days. :)

unknown territory

It's amazing how a simple thing can come around and bite you in the butt. Hard.

At the office, we have this web system used to track our SAP development transports from our development server to our training, staging, and production systems. It was working fine and dandy until the company decides to switch the emailing system to MS Exchange. The web system continued to work, but it no longer triggered any emails and so, a lot of things were late because the respective people weren't informed about whatever they were supposed to do.

The problem with this system is that the vendor has already lost its main programmer, and the consultant left behind doesn't even have access to it. Checking with the people in charge of the web servers also did not yield any results, except for a lot of "it's not our responsibility" and "we don't care about you, go away" type of responses.

So I decided, hey, why not I just fix it myself? It should be pretty simple, right? Find a string that defines the SMTP address and change it to the new one. Yup, sounds like something anyone can do.

I ask for developer access.

I get it the next day. Eager to get on with the rest of my work, I just dived into the code and quickly found the string I wanted to change. So I change it.

I log back onto the system: runtime error. Perplexed, I checked back the small portion of code I changed. Doesn't seem to be any problem there. Hmmm...

So there I was stuck with this problem that I didn't have a handle on with my current level of VB/ASP knowledge and access. I even went to tweaking the Web.config file to try and enable more details in the error message, but that didn't help me either. Then while I was looking here and there for a solution, I accidentally deleted it, that config file. That's when the shit hit the fan right there.

In retrospect, if I had left that file alone, I might've been able to minimize the damage.

And, if I had checked to make sure the system was OK before I touched anything, I would've been able to screw the server people for breaking it. Never assume that people would do things right. :\

So here I am with a broken system, and bits of code on my hands.

XFire In-Game on W3L launched Warcraft III

I was hoping to get in-game messaging on our specially loaded Warcraft III clients, but I've yet to find a working solution.

Tried one posted by a TP_Moonstar here, but it doesn't seem to do it.

It was hard enough keeping my eyes off Elf's avatar and signature. :O Now that's hot.

who's this i wonder? Looks a little fake... but I wonder who it is? :)

DotA online

DotA + PvPGN = reduction in travel = saving of cost.

PvPGN server address = here.

Voice chat = XFire Group Chat: The Brotherhood.

:D

[update 10/8/2006 11.30pm]

So far, the current configuration only allows me (the local client) to host our games. Some additional address translation must be done by the server to handle the local addresses of the other players behind their respective routers. This isn't a problem if a player is directly connected to the Internet.

So, brothers, you'll need to do this to host games if I'm not around:-

1 - Sign up for TZO or DynDNS. This is to avoid hardcoding your addresses on the server. Configure your dynamic hostname on your router so that it is automatically refreshed whenever you're connected.

2 - Use a static IP on your LAN. This keeps you from having to change your router's port forwarding rules every time your IP address changes.

3 - Set your game port. Go to Warcraft 3's Game Options and set your game port as per the following list. This has to be unique for each player so that the game server's address translation can identify you properly:
- myuu - 6114
- merv - 6115
- fish - 6116
- andyb - 6117
- az - 6118

4 - Lastly, let me know your dynamic hostname, and your local static address to be configured at my end.

Of course, we haven't actually tested this. But theoretically it should work. :P Because all the server does is tell all participating players the IP address of the game host, and then they'll connect to that host directly. Since you guys are behind routers, I'm guessing your PCs are reporting your LAN addresses to the server instead of your Internet addresses.

We'll see how it goes with Fish's connection this weekend.

[update 11/8/2006 2.00am]

Hmm.. the PvPGN support forums say that it shouldn't be a problem at my end at all. Basically all clients behind routers should have their selected game ports (whatever it is, default 6112) forwarded to their hosting LAN address. Both TCP and UDP must be forwarded.

So guys, do this first, then we'll try the previous solution.

[update 12/8/2006 1:27am]

Yes, forget all that nonsense, and configure Windows Firewall properly. :P But of course, a static LAN IP is still recommended.

Just got back from Singapore. Will definitely consider coach instead of Air Asia next time. And, no more late night flights before a working Monday.

Also just got ripped by a midnight taxi for a trip from KL Sentral to home. RM 20. HWB 7733. Beware. Note to self: Ask the fare arrangement before boarding the cab.

All in all, a good trip with good company. :)

mtv is evil

I wanted to watch Fergie's new London Bridge video and her site pointed me to MTV which then asked me to install an ActiveX extension for Firefox. I thought sure, why not, cuz I could always uninstall it later. So after loading MTV Overdrive, watching an ad, then waiting a few more minutes for the video to load, I get the following message:

"Music videos can only be viewed in the US"

****ers.

So then I gave up, and popped open Firefox's Extensions page to uninstall whatever it was that MTV had me installed. Surprise surprise, nothing! It took me a while to google a solution, which was to delete the npmozax.dll file from Firefox's plugins\ subdirectory [source].

Moral of the story: Just stick to torrents.

Anyways, I've finished reading Death Note! An excellently twisted ending. Yummy. Now on to Berserk and other things.

burned out

Pretty much spent the weekend recovering from flu. Started out about 2 hours into the gang's gaming session on Friday night with a terrible sore throat after drinking 2 Cokes at McDs. The pain only occurs when I swallow, and it was really sharp, and only on the right side. :O

The night did not come easy. Every swallow kept me awake, and drifting in and out of sleep I was till 6am, when I had to get up to catch a bus to Bangi. Being almost sick, I was hoping that a fever would break out so that I didn't have to attend this event, but it didn't.

So off I went. I decided to drive there instead, since my wish might come late and force me to retire early. Our business division's Technical Day was being held that Saturday morning. It's basically sports day, but with events disguised as technical sports. Only one rang true to its name, which was 'Get Online', but the rest were pretty much the usual fun stuff. :)

During this time, my nose started leaking. It didn't leak much, but due to the lack of available tissue paper, I had to sacrifice my red Nike shirt to stifle it. It would've looked weird with me carrying an extra red shirt around, but fortunately our House color was red, and it looked more 'patriotic' than odd. I took part in the water event, and the aching calves I got after the relay race didn't help my condition at all.

The whole thing finished at around 4.30pm, our House had won and we'd just finished raping the hampers for our share of the spoils of war. I quickly drove back home for a quick rest before having to leave the house again that night.

It was a wedding that my mom refuses to skip. The groom's mom was a high school classmate, and there she'll meet many others whom she haven't met in a long time. The venue was at Felda's Dewan Perdana, pretty deep in KL but not hard to get to. It was fun seeing the ladies catch up. One of them even brought some black and white photos to share with the rest. Now I've got one of my mom dressed up as a cop in a costume party. Cute :) While they were having fun I would've died of boredom, but fortunately one of them brought a daughter whom I had a good time talking to. Too bad she's engaged tho.

The whole thing left me going through 18 pieces of tissue. I've also started sneezing sneezes that somehow want to pull something out of my lungs. Needless to say, I was out for the count the following day, staying in bed and having porridge meals. Was supposed to go to Masjid India to get stuff for the Singapore folk too, but it couldn't happen with my condition. The flu and the sports event have left me aching all over, and I found it hard to walk properly. I definitely need to visit the condo pool more often.

And today comes Monday, and I was planning to take the day off when my boss reminds me that I need to set my Technical & Functional competencies for the next performance year. Bleh. It was he who told me to wait for the bigger boss' email, which only got mailed out Friday night. Note to self: don't always listen to the boss. :P

oops

you know those credit card signature slips that have the TIP and TOTAL lines blank? i always assumed that if i write in an amount, it'll get charged.

but apparently not so. logically, how will they bill me the extra when they've already returned my credit card?

so i was with my mom at la bodega last night when i did that. she had a laughing fit in the car on the way home. :P

well, at least it was good to see her laugh like that after such a long time.

so i'm back with my xchat client, downloading volumes of manga that i've missed for the past few months. 3 vols of Bleach, 2 vols of Air Gear, and a few others i have queued for viewing tonight. i just lup my download server. think i'll give it more RAM as a present.

pening

back at work this week. but not really. have to facilitate some discussion in UNITEN. so the real work is still pending.

i've added photos of the bon-odori to the gallery. check them out via the corresponding bon-odori post. i know i owe you guys more photos for some of the previous posts.. might just upload them later, since my upload plugins seem to work now. [edit: uploaded to this entry] :)

it's been a few days since i picked up my oakleys from Reliance. been having a distorted view, and since then i've been making a few trips back there just to see if there's anything that can be done. on my last trip, one of the girls said that it was due to a change from a straight frame to a curved one, and that many others have experienced it as well. she then did a little straightening to ease the transition, but i feel it'll take a long while more before i can get used to this. my depth perception is all whacked, and i find myself almost missing steps and tripping over things.

still, it seems to be improving.

the colleague whom i sold the phone to seems to have some complaints about it. bleh.

bon-odori

just got back from the KL bon-odori festival. it wasn't quite as i expected.

i was thinking more of slow walks through streets of stalls with food and games to play. then fireworks and all that.

in this event, we had the food stalls. no games. next to them was a stadium field with a raised platform in the middle. we (myself, my colleague Mai, her friend Ain and her sis Muni) were there quite early, so there wasn't much happening and i thought it wouldn't be exciting. boy, was i wrong. the crowd hasn't thickened yet, so we just got ourselves some seats at the stadium's grandstand and waited. from 5pm to 7pm.

still, while we waited, it was nice to look at the crowd starting to pour in. there were girls in yukatas, girls in goth, girls in pyjamas and pacifiers. it was quite interesting. :P

when the event actually started, they nicely kept the speeches short and went straight on to the bon-odori dance! basically, on the platforms the drummers will play a beat, accompanied by music from the PA system, with a ring of 'dancers' around them. beyond the platform, visitors are also encouraged to form circles around the platform and follow the dancers' steps as they moved along.

the first round showed that many were still shy, and it took a while to get everyone into the groove of things. i myself had to wait for people to join Mai before i got into the mood. but once it started, it felt exhilirating. the steps in the dances were also very cute, and you can't help being amused by the throngs of people dancing to them.

the bon-odori performance was repeated 3 times this evening. each performance contained the same 4 songs, each with their different rhythms and steps. each song was repeated twice. my gang and i went down for all performances, and we pretty much memorized the moves at the last one.

in between performances, guest dancers did their thing: the first time was a cultural japanese dance, and the second was a local group dancing our tradisional malay dance to some song about selangor. needless to say, we skipped the second.

at the end of everything, everyone was sweaty and exhausted. the crowd then joined the huge queue of cars trying to leave the area. i'd say everyone was eager to get home, since we saw two pileups along the federal highway involving the patrons (we could tell from the yukatas). the festival was held in shah alam, by the way.

next year, i'll be more prepared. maybe even rent a yukata. :)

no rest for the addicted

i wanna go download:-

FuhQuake, Quakeworld client - relive the ol' Quaking days with this free quake client. I assume it includes the engine itself to enable a plethora of Quake mod remakes. Works on Windows XP too. :)

here, i was going to mention Ur-Quan Masters as well, but they've yet to develop network play for the SuperMelee mode. shucks. and there are rumors of a new StarCon sequel too - make it happen by signing a petition.

anyway, last night the gang caught Dead Man's Chest on screen last night. it was a blast! not as good the original, but it was riveting enough and it had it's many moments. can't wait for the sequel. ;)

a splint for a broken car

the old man and the little sis takes the honda to Batu Laut (near Morib) to pick up a Laser-class dinghy/boat/yacht. they're able to do so thanks to the roof racks on the car. the car starts overheating on the way to Port Klang, which when recounted back to me seemed usual, altho this time it seemed more accelerated and frequent. and i'd just refilled the water quite recently.

then, adding to that a sound is produced. a constant bumping sound. i think it was at this point that my dad, being an automotive engineer, suspects that the gasket is gone. they try driving with the radiator cap off to relieve pressure, but it didn't do much good.

as they pass by Klang town to return home, the car is unable to maintain power.. and slowly stops to a halt at the top of a 2-lane flyover. he didn't even bother restarting the car since he knew what the problem is and started sourcing for a tow truck. then some guys came by and tried to fix the problem, but all they ended up with is a radiator fountain.

anyway, they used an old main sheet (a particularly large rope used while sailing) to get the car towed to a workshop in Klang. looks like the car will stay there for 10 days or so while the engine gets overhauled and all that. think my dad wants to sell the car too.

at least i still have my sister's Kelisa.

thing is, the last time i refilled the water while the engine was on, the radiator seemed to reject the water i was giving it. that might've been an early sign. but i wouldn't have known anyways. perhaps i won't be doing a transplant after all.

anyway, just read an article on IT Screen Goddesses. no... it just doesn't work.

splurge-fest part 2

last weekend i sooooo wanted to stay home and not do anything and indirectly save me some money. but it was not to be.

friday it was. my dear colleague S loses her ciplak Samsung phone. she asks me whether i'll sell mine. after some haggling, she accepted it for rm400. but i'd need a new phone to replace mine. so what else can be just as functional but affordable as a nokia 6230i?

so that was the plan. i'd have enlisted Merv's help to pick one up for me when he goes to town like he usually does.

but no. lil bro breaks his rimless glasses for a second time this month. the first time it was a shuttle cock smash, and this time it was a soccer ball.

saturday comes. i'm supposed to take him to the optician to get another pair of glasses. thought i'd just go there, get him hooked up with the cheapest frames and lenses available (which i did). instead, we were there for about two hours, trying to cater to his 'fashion sense'. and while that happened, i picked up a pair for myself as well.

dark bronze thread 2.0 oakley frames with RX lenses. rm980. :P

then damdam calls, says he lost his phone in a 'post-drinking accident'. so we both went out to town to scout for phones. to summarise things, i think decisions are harder to make as you grow older. :P not referring to myself of course.

new nokia 6230i. yay. and some coolermaster chipset coolers.

and that was saturday, marking the end of the splurge-fest brunt. on sunday, went out with my mom for lunch and grocery shopping, and then a wedding in the evening. it was Bedah's wedding, a friend from SKBD and SMBB. it was my mom who was invited, and i just tagged along, so needless to say a lot of people were surprised to see me there. :D well, she asked the bunch of us to stay for pictures, but it was late and we couldn't stay. there were a lot of people i haven't met for a while too: Geok Lii, Izad, Norida, Maya, Sue, Leslie, Fairuz, Gerald. and some seniors whom i recognised but didn't bother talking to. very nostalgic. :)

so the wedding card cost me a bit. and that marks the end of the weekend.

today, i'm in town for more SAP training. hopefully i won't be bothered by the office much.

week of mess

don't know what to rant about besides the usual work gripe. my life's been pretty messy these days. i haven't cleaned out the computer parts from the previous mobo switch. my desks are a mess. i've misplaced my 1G thumb drive.

work provides no sanctuary. so many concurrent tasks that sometimes i'm at a loss as to which one to do first.

maybe i should make use of that pool table after all.

at least, i'm covered in the entertainment sector. watched Ong Bak, Infernal Affairs 3, The Usual Suspects, Avalon, Failed to Launch. using Media Portal as my main media player now, and it's working very well with my cordless mouse. except for dvd playback. will definitely need to get one MCE remote from oz. started playing WoW again, with all my graphics settings at maximum. :D some instability problems with BF2 tho, but i'll figure it out.

anyways, the artifacting problem is actually attributed to the Intel 865PE northbridge not being able to compensate the different speeds at work when the computer is overclocked. so i actually got the same problems with this current motherboard at the same overclocked speed. but fortunately, someone on the net pointed out a very old and long thread about it, and i managed to fix it using a little utility that tweaks the DRAM Latency Timer on the chipset.

so i think i might actually have a lot of spare computer parts lying around. thankfully, the market for AGP-based products are still in demand on lowyat.net.

perhaps it would've been better to make the jump to pci-express after all.

back on board

picked up a 2nd hand ASUS P4P800 today. works splendidly at default speeds. no artifacts too. :) so that leaves me with a working spare 9800 pro. was thinking of passing it to fish... then maybe get him to try a flash to make it a 9800 xt. it does have an rv360 core, which means it can do much better. memory speed will be a limiting factor though.

so tomorrow it's back to benchmarking and overclocking. :) and it's also nice to see CPU temperatures below 45 C instead of the usual 60+. maybe the dunking of the heatsink in some water really did the trick.

super stress

sigh... stress levels peaked yesterday as the search for sydney accommodation continues. the thing is i can't do as much at home, so much time is spent on this activity in the office. and the office is already hectic as it is, with the stupid little issues that get under your skin. and then there's my mom's HK3 tax forms to submit. argh, so many expectations, so little time and brain matter.

it didn't help that i got creamed in BF2 that evening; there goes my only source of stress relief. i'm also still bummed out abt my puter...

well, at least superman returned. to a hot MILF i might add (plagiarised from Merv-speech) :P when it comes to watching movies in a cinema, i'm still amazed at how people can manage to get their legs and knees up against the seat in front, even with the huge amount of leg space given. it's like going as low as possible increases the amount of enjoyment. maybe they admire the back of our heads.

i curse thee with cronic back pain!

rain rain go away

to my utter dismay, i'm still experiencing artifacts with my new card! :O thinking back, this might be attributed to me not seating the previous card in its slot properly when i was booting up this one time. :O

that points to one thing: my radeon 9800 pro is not broken. :P

so... anyone wanna buy? :P i'll need more funds for a test motherboard. wait, i already have one. grrr but i don't want to go through the trouble of reinstalling windows again. might as well get a proper mobo and do it once and for all.

and i'm already eyeing one on lowyat.net.

anyway, this 7800 GS is pretty neat. lets me play BF2 alright with every setting set to High, altho there are a few jerks here and there. can't be helped, since i'm playing at 1600x1200. only problem is the fan noise. when it's at full speed it's really really noisy. trying to find a way to tweak the thresholds.

i can see clearly now~

wooo hooo. i just picked up my BFG 7800 GS video card from dinster. no more shall i have to endure a bad aim due to black panoramic strips blocking my view in BF2. no longer shall i have to rest my eyes so soon due to the shimmering text and flying bits of texture in WoW.

will this make me happy? i sure hope so. :) it's not economical to buy any more AGP upgrades, but i wanna maximize this computer before being forced to upgrade to PCI-Express.

ladies and gentlemen, game on.

books gewd :D

it's been two days since my KB trip, and i've managed to finish two artemis fowl books. i had my sister pick up Artemis Fowl and the Opal Deception while she was out doing errands today. in the meantime, i stayed home in solitary comfort, enjoying my off-in-lieu with Into The Blue with Jessica Alba and the original Dune. i started on the book sometime in the afternoon, and it was a very easy read.

gives me pleasure to know that there'll be a 5th book coming out. something else to look forward to besides the last part of Paolini's Inheritance, the last 3 parts of Garth Nix's Keys to the Kingdom, and the last 2 parts of Funke's 'Inkstuff'. still, i'm drooling mostly for Inheritance, since the story is quite epic, and i like epic stories. like Nix's Old Kingdom trilogy. wish he'd get right back on the sequel to Creature in the Case.

oh, and i have like a dozen volumes of Celestial Zone to cover as well. thanks cuzzies. :)

anyway, will be picking up my new 7800 GS tomorrow. then i'll be back on wow, and the rest of my funds dedicated to my honda's engine transplant.

north and back part 2: kota bharu

the next morning was a working saturday. sucks, but true. it was supposed to be a gotong-royong day to clean up our work areas and follow the 5S methodology. i tried, i really did, but i think i wiped at the first S. strangely enough, the person who announced the cleanup was on leave. :P well, at least that morning i managed to clear up my itinerary with chief medical officer (CMO)'s PA. i was to go to Kota Bharu that evening for a briefing on Sunday. Sunday! could you believe that? i'll definitely kill someone if they won't let me take a replacement day off. metaphorically of course.

anyway, she gave me an open ticket for the return flight. i was oblivious to the trouble that might've put me in, but fortunately i didn't have to go through any... misfortune.

mom and sis were out when i got home from work. luckily they got back in time to send me off to KL Sentral. in the meantime, i got meself some lil'bro-prepared instant noodles and watched Fearless with bad subtitles. and since my mom dropped her phone again that day, we decided to give her the new 6230i we've kept in hiding since Friday. playing with it makes me want to get one too. :P

it was quiet on the ERL. it was quiet in the boarding area. it was quiet on the plane. nice stewardesses though. mmm. most of my interaction with people was only through eye contact and head gestures. i managed to slip into MPH the night before to pick up a threebie of Artemis Fowl, Artemis Fowl and the Arctic Incident, and Artemis Fowl and the Eternity Code for the upcoming roadtrips. i had the first two with me. CMO was on the same flight, but in business class. must be nice to be management.

we took a cab to our hotel, a dingy one at the outskirts of the city called New Pacific. the exterior looked nice, but it was painted in rather dark colors. the room was also a terrible disappointment compared to Sheraton. the bathroom vent could 'outnoise' a jet turbine; there's a strange stain on its floor. the room itself is alright i guess. garbed in very classy, shiny but dark colors again. reminded me of a room in a big old mansion. a haunted one.

i didn't sleep well that night. at least i finished reading my first book.

the briefing on the following day went as per normal. got picked up from the hotel to the local headquarters. parking looked like a bitch; honestly, i've never seen cars quadruple parked in random directions like that. not even in the visitor parking level of Menara TM. well, that was just the cars in the building. the parking scenario in the public areas were.. somewhat better. except for the schools of taxis and kereta sewas waiting for passengers.

we finished early, so there was sometime for me to go around shopping for thingies. Kelantan is famous for keropok and textiles, so there's no point looking at anything else. well, maybe there are other things, but i didn't care for them just yet. the locals pointed out some nearby pasars for the better shops. i just headed to one which had both items on sale. first, selendangs for mom, tudungs for cuzzies (guess where the bus money went, girls. :P), then keropok for whoever. a little more than what i'd usually spend, but the fabric and weave designs here are just fantastic. i just bought the mid range, and those looked really nice enough.

the CMO was a Kelantanese himself, so he opted to go home for a bit, leaving me alone to do my shopping. i guess that's how i got ripped off by the taxi guy driving me back to the airport. charged me slightly less than airport taxi rates for a ride in a beat up merc without air conditioning. should've checked the rates with the CMO before hotel check-in.

check-in counters closed. continued reading second book. flight delayed. finished second book.

stewardesses not so cute this time. except for the head stewardess which i only caught a glimpse of on the way out.

it was around 10.30 when i finally set foot at home. both my mom and sis went out to pick me up from KL Sentral, which was nice of em. :D gave me to play with my mom's new phone even further. can't go wrong with "hips don't lie" as a ringtone.

and when i stepped into my room, i was surprised with a brand new IKEA chair for my compy. it's awesome, and big enough to even shadow my 24" monitor. Merv and i will need to compare notes now. thanks you guys :D

now, on to the third book!

north and back part 1: penang

the week after my cuzzie visit, my schedule at work became more packed than ever. i was in Bangi conducting a system training class whole day Tuesday, and i only found out that evening that i need to go outstation sporadically for the next coupla days.

and i had to be in Penang on friday.

having discussed the schedule with my assistant Amin, we decided that both of us should be there for the first session of this 'roadshow'. me being the presenter, and him being the apprentice. due to the short notice, we had very little time to prepare the mini manuals needed for the stuff we were going to demonstrate, and we barely finished before embarking on our drive up Thursday afternoon. Amin drove of course :); his perdana v6 was in better shape than any of my cars.

it rained quite a bit throughout the drive. the mood was dreary, but we managed to counter the effect by talking about a lotta things. guy stuff mostly. colleagues should be treated as friends, even if they're your subordinates. since i'm not good at scolding people, this would be a better alternative.

when we reached the island, it took a bit to get our bearings right. i had to step up my role as navigator since Amin needed to pay full attention to the mad Penang drivers. after some turns here and there, we finally reached our destination: The Sheraton. working with my company does have some perks. :P we were each settled into separate Deluxe Rooms. needless to say, it was very very nice.

that night we took flight to Batu Ferringhi (not sure i spelled that right) to grab some DVDs for our other colleagues. well, actually Amin did. i just tagged along. then we went back to town to sate our hunger with Line Clear's nasi kandar, located near The Oriental hotel. it was gewd.. very gewd. i rarely eat nasi kandar, but this one was just mind blowing. loved the fried chicken.

after dinner, we just went back to our rooms and chilled. i had my copy of Inkheart, which my cuzzies recommended, to read in bed. the story is a bit too slow for me, so i could only read 2-3 chapters at a time before i'm unable to resist the urge to close my eyes. slow, but good. finished it the next day before we left for home.

i was also tempted to call Fiena, an old college mate who now lives in Penang. i think. but there wasn't much time for me to go out and meet people, so there wasn't any point in doing so. next time perhaps.

in the morning we were up bright and early for our session. it was supposed to be in the afternoon, but we managed to squeeze in our material before lunch and was able to leave for home early. even so, it was dark when we got back to KL, with the heavy rain pounding at us all the way south. still, there was enough time to meet up with Merv for dinner at Chili's. his treat. thanks Merv. :)

shopping spree

whee. me dear singapore cuzzies came to visit last weekend. i like spending time with them; somehow all the stress from work just disappears. they went shopping for the entire weekend (including monday), and it was a little tiring, but i don't mind. good company will always bring out the joy in anything. :) and i got a nice new shirt and mirrormask, which i've yet to watch just yet.

i knew you girls would pull something like that in the last minute. :P

anyways, it's amazing how women can shop so much. and i've yet to be exposed to the hardcore shoppers. :O

so, after they left for home, Merv called and we had tong shui in SS2. Vivien's in town too. i forgot to mention, she's his wife. :)

in the following days to come, i managed to cover some movies i've downloaded. The Island was nice. storyline was a little weak, but the cool chase scenes and Scarlet Johannsen (atsui!) saved the day! Doom was fun to watch. a little mindless havoc never hurt anyone. :) the first-person perspective scene was nostalgic, altho the actual game is more fast paced. :P Hitch was a great movie. Eva Mendez! :D

now i've Ong Bak, and a little bit of Bewitched left.

at the office, i've finally finished B13, a French action flick. it has elements of those people who like to jump and scale tall buildings.. can't quite recall their name. anyways, it's directed by Luc Besson, the guy behind The Fifth Element. it's great work. :) and Dany Verissimo is cute too. :D

don't worry, i only watch during break time or after hours when i'm waiting for things to finish running. :P

speaking of downloading, my server's been acting up a lot lately. somehow the power died during the weekend, then there was a power failure on tuesday. and the router's DDNS function is starting to crap out every week again. i thought D-Link was bad, but Linksys seems to want to take their place at the bottom of the crap jar.

if i had a JTAG cable, i'd switch to DD-WRT in a heartbeat.

a bump in the night

just watched The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, screening courtesy of Catcha. lotsa eye candy for sure, girls and cars alike. more girls than cars actually.

anyway, i parked me car at a very difficult spot to get out of. not because it was tight, but due to the heavy volume of cars leaving the parking structure. a civic had just passed behind us (merv, fish, and henry were passengers) and there was a gap for me to reverse into the queue. but what i didn't realise was that the queue had stopped right there behind me, and i didn't notice the guys' oi's before it was too late. luckily, it was a lil bump and no major harm was done.

thinking abt what got into me tonight, it was probably me assuming traffic flow would go a certain ways, or me assuming my passengers had me covered. anyhows, it was bad driving on my part. but this points out one funny characteristic abt me: when i'm alone, i will somehow or rather always keep myself on the ground and out of harm's way. but when i'm with people, i start getting complacent, somehow subconsciously hoping others would do my thinking for me. remember the low yat parking ticket incident? :(

maybe it's a part of me being easily swayed by others. a part of me that can't stand confrontations. a part of me that is always agreeable. a part of me that will always leave me being second best at most. a part that will leave me having what i need but not what i want.

or maybe i just think too much. rarely emotional. whenever i do get angry, all the arguments would play out in my head and never out of my mouth. afraid of losing; afraid of rejection; afraid of getting hurt. afraid of getting the people close to me hurt. maybe.

well, at least one thing amusing abt this whole incident was that there were two lost girls taking camera pics of the scene of the crime.

happy birthday mom!

mum turned *censored* yesterday. was going to get her a new phone, but the particular model i was looking for, the 6230i, was out of stock. well, i'll just get it sooner or later. instead, i picked up a card from parkson sungei wang, and the sis picked up a cake.

so it's a non-school holiday monday today, and the roads are almost as packed as it was 2 weeks earlier. luckily i still managed to get to work on time, despite being nocturnal over the weekend to finish watching gundam seed and destiny. monday's are usually the hardest workdays, as you struggle to remember where you left off the week before. but because i'm afflicted with a 'dreaming of work' syndrome, it wasn't so hard this time.

feeling under the weather tho. sigh...

yeah, i'll be going to sydney sometime july/august. my sister's been admitted to UNSW with a scholarship to boot. :) i'm so happy for her!!! at the same time, she got a silver for selangor in SUKMA. terer siot.

it's going to be fun to get to visit another 'western' country. and with my sister there, i can take the opportunity to order stuff via her. :D

anyway, i just saw a video of the demonstration held in front of klcc when petrol prices went up. those people got a free shower. :) can't blame them though: although our gas is still subsidized, our relative cost of living is still pretty high. heck, i don't think i'll be able to afford a house within a 50km radius of my office.

fat thunderbird

recently found my workplace Mozilla Thunderbird client acting messed up. every time a message comes in, i get a message saying my Inbox summary file has been corrupted and needs to be deleted. yet even when i did that the problem still persists.

after scouring the web for answers, it seems that Thunderbird mailboxes get crappy the bigger it gets, especially when it hits 2GB. my Inbox was 2.07GB :O it seems that Thunderbird doesn't compact your boxes for you automatically, so even if you delete files from a folder, the message is really still there.

so the moral of the story is to compact your folders regularly. there are probably some extensions you can download that'd do that for you automatically so you don't forget. while trying to recover my Inbox, i've had to rebuild files, renamed folders and whatnot to get my emails back, so don't repeat my mistake of letting it grow too big.

myuu's inbox after compacting: 571MB.

puter matters

my puter just experienced it's first 'ghostly reboot' yesterday while i was watching an episode of BSG. the first occurence since its return into its semi-modified casing. checked the temperature history and found it well within its normal range (i've seen it do constant 67C without any glitches). hopefully it isn't dying a slow and unknowing death. :O

the original 7800 GS i ordered got cancelled, due to Inno3d not having any more stock. but the same guy managed to hook up with BFG, so i'll be getting a new version on june 11th. yea, i know i shouldn't splurge, but the logic behind this purchase is BFG's True Lifetime Warranty, which replaces the card with the same or better in the event of the fault, irregardless of the product life. so hopefully the card dies after they run out of AGP stock and give me a PCI-Express equivalent instead :D

anyway, the new card should allow me to play BF2 better. my bigger display lets me catch tiny enemy movements easily, but the major artifacts blurring my vision removes that advantage. oh well, i still managed to get my veteran support combat badge and combat infantry medal. there seems to be a bug where i'm awarded with that same medal each time i start the game, but my stats still show one (if there's to be a bug, they should make it thorough!). unknowingly, i got myself a navy cross medal as well. a lot of the stats requirements have gone down, but that's no reason to increase my BF2-playing time with lotsa other things for me to do.

while the new holes in my pc seem to help, i can't rest until i've finished all my planned mods, including some vents on the side panel. i don't have enough cutting discs to last the project though, so i'll have to try and find some more. however, that trip to pasar road just ain't happening.

finally, some episode checkpoints:
Lost S2 E21 - betrayal!
Rome S1 E10 - soft porn!
Battlestar Galactica S2 E05 - not really soft porn!
House MD S2 E04 - starting to get boring!
O.C. S3 E25 - XO

money matters

stretched so thin... it'll take another month or two for my finances to normalize. i haven't even considered savings for my accompany-my-sis-to-Australia trip. credit card bill for the past two months have spiked due to the timing belt incident and 'promotion-related expenses'.

at least my net pay finally crossed the 2k boundary.

still, the end of my woes is nowhere near. the honda is acting up once again, this time unable to keep a decent idle rev. it'd be either too high upon ignition, or too low a few minutes after.. low enough to stall. that car will have to go soon, but it's not for me to decide whether to sell cuz it's not my car.

speaking of cars, my trust in Utama Tyre & Battery Service has dwindled. i went back to get this rev problem looked at, and they assign me this noob to look at the car. he didn't even check the symptoms before recommending a spark plug/cable change. and lo and behold.. problem still there! then he unloads a huge amount of wd40 like stuff into the carb and making my car propel tons of white smoke from the rear. the yelling from his colleagues didn't even faze him.

time to change places. the original foreman of this workshop was good and trustworthy, but he left to start his own stint in sunway. a little too far for me though. :(

so, any recommendations besides ah keong? :P

elven fetish

last weekend i was told that i had to attend training this week. so i've been at menara TH instead of the office so far during business hours. still, i find myself back there just to finish up things that needed finishing. my training will last till tuesday, so the late nights will probably continue too.

it's just been really hectic these days, and a long list of tasks await my attention. it's hard being a process improver. and while my car can move, there seems to be something wrong with the idle rev timing, causing the car to rev too low and at times stall altogether. gonna have to bring it back to the shop.

seriously thinking i should consider a new car now.

anyways, this state of mind has kept me somewhat on the edge, and i end up snapping at people for no reason. i just can't help it. being hooked on a book named Eldest doesn't help either. instead of socialising, i'd rather drown myself in its fantasy world. yes, there are elven chicks involved. it's part 2 of a trilogy; fortunately the last part isn't published yet, but my sister was kind enough to buy me Sir Thursday (part 4 of a series of 7; arigatou ayin-chan! :D) so i'll still be antisocial for a little while longer.

by the way, i just upgraded my router's firmware a while ago. there's definitely some improvement in terms of accessing my own site internally, and hopefully this version brings an end to the constant downtime. :\

also changed the body text color of this site to black. reading my own site was putting a strain to my eyes at this resolution.

you probably weren't able to access this site till now. this damned linksys router is giving tons of problems, i might think i was better off with my d-link. previous versions of the WRT54G router were supposedly good, but this latest version 5 uses a different OS, and so far it sucks big time. can get past a few days without a soft reset, and the damned DDNS function doesn't work properly either.

truth prevails

was in a meeting with the VP HR yesterday. we were there to help our users explain some of the steps forward that we've taken in some issues raised by internal audit. i hoped that i could just have sat there letting my superiors do the answering, but in the end that was not to be.

although i've known him (the VP) since i joined the company (he conducted my take-in interview), there's somehow this feeling that he might snap at you if you say something he doesn't like to hear. but then again, usually, who wouldn't? but anyways, i had to speak up for a certain issue, and there was this feeling of panic in the beginning.

it's not that i don't know the facts or what's happening... it's just that the truth might actually hurt my relationship with the users, or even my colleagues. but in my cuak state i managed to blurt out a longwinded explanation (with a few repetitious statements) without incriminating anyone in particular. it was the truth, but the truth without names. or something like that.

i guess at the end of the day, it's easier to give out some form of the truth. whether you like it or not. i'll need more training in that aspect, definitely.

so tomorrow i head out for PD, for a work-out session with the project support team. will be there the entire weekend, save the later half of sunday, so you prolly won't hear from me till then. yea, rejoice while you can. :P all that's left for me to do is to pack and clear up the mess in my room a bit. bed sheets are in dire need of changing as well.

my computer seems to be happy in its new casing. i haven't totally closed it yet, but there hasn't been any crashes or reboots so far. i'll post pics later when i have the time. one tiny quirk seems to be the boot up sequence; somehow the system will report a non system disk error which a simple Enter will bypass. it's not major, but annoying.

a tiring off day

yes. i took a day off today. not surprising you say? well, bleh to you. :P

slept reasonably early last night, but i ended up waking up around 11, feeling a little under the weather. maybe my body misses the workload at the office. yeah, right.

so the day started off with a visit to my workshop in DU to pick up my accord, and to service my sister's kelisa. grabbed some light brunch at dharoos, while waiting for the service which was unexpectedly fast. they tell us her tires are gone, which i guess is the reason that it's still not aligned after. oh well, at least mine only cost rm900. and that was after they threw in a new number plate and wiper motor.

back home, i continued where i left off with my computer case, and i've finally finished modding the main frame (with only 3 heavy-duty discs remaining out of 25). definitely can't continue with the side panel, so i'll have to wait till i acquire more fibreglass discs for my rotary tool.

then it was back to the order of the day, which was to mop the floor, scrub a shower curtain and the balcony. needless to say, i'm really tired.

super pissed and super broke

dad's forcing me to arrange this year's road tax myself. reason: supposedly i didn't pay him back for last year's. i'm pretty sure i told him that the amounts were used to pay for my brother's tuition fees. or i might've passed the message to a sibling, which didn't get delivered. either way, he's not easy to talk to, and after this, i don't think i want to speak to him at all.

at the same time, the car's timing belt snapped this afternoon. i knew it was coming, and i had planned to get it replaced at the next service. but i guess it just couldn't wait. think i clocked about 130k on this one. a very expensive lesson indeed.

more interesting facts

Pos Malaysia's COUNTER SERVICES moved to Amcorp Mall. 'Serahan Tingkap' services still remain at Jalan Sultan.
Pos Malaysia is still POS. But the counter lady was so nice I couldn't get angry. :P

I'm officially broke. Money gone into the recent LYP splurge, the recent 'belanja makans', and a 7800 GS.

Going to try out Intervideo's rendition of a Home Theater.

some interesting facts

The Pos Malaysia Jalan Sultan Mail Depot has shifted its 'Tingkap' operations to 2nd floor of the Amcorp Mall.
The Pos Malaysia Jalan Sultan Mail Depot closes on the first Saturday of each month.
Pos Malaysia is truly a *POS* for not mentioning these details on their delivery cards.

The DDNS function on version 5 of the Linksys WRT54G router comes to you broken by default. To fix it, check Linksys Easy Answers. This site was on a short hiatus due to this (and I didn't want to restart my connection and lose valuable torrent progress).

FF7 graphics look awful on Radeon-based cards. The current patches available are just not good enough. There might be newer versions on Qhimm, but his forums are down at the moment. Here and here are some other FF7 patches. I'm currently using the FF7Music 1.51 util to override the lame midis with PSF versions. Also replaced some tracks with Advent Children versions, in MP3 format. :D

proton's finest

Went on a site visit to Proton yesterday morning. We were to go and see how they've setup their HR system landscape. Turns out they're not faring as well as we were. But a lot of issues that they experience are simiilar to ours.

At least we got ourselves a main plant tour. And meet their young female HR executives. :D

At night, I ended up watching MI and MI:II to possibly fill up any storyline gaps before I watch MI:III tomorrow. Didn't even touch WoW or FF7. I was also looking at a few HTPC software like Cyberlink's PowerCinema and the open-source Media Portal. It's just so hard to browse a movie collection displayed in a small window on a 1920x1200 screen from across the room. The MediaLife software that came with the mouse is just too simple.

more than meets the eye

I finally got my tax forms sent in last Saturday night, despite last minute use of Liquid Paper. There's always some quirk when filling up the forms, even though it's the same thing each year.

Earlier that day, I had to work in the morning, hence ruining the holiday mood. A 'quick' Worms' World Party LAN game kept me at the office for a bit, and then I rushed home to get my mom to her dental appointment. My mom had taken a break from an event in the Bursa Malaysia building behind Menara Maybank, so we didn't have much time. Since I was going to drive her back to town anyway, I thought I'd swing by LYP and get a few things:-

- a Linksys WRT54G Broadband Router,
- a Linksys 802.11g USB or PCI Adapter, and
- maybe a soundcard

My mom had already paid for parking at Bursa, so it was only logical that we leave the car there. Finding the place while navigating the traffic jams took a while, as we were having problems pinpointing the location itself but we managed to get there not too late while finally learning some of the finer points of Raja Chulan and Pudu.

So from there I walked. Along Jalan Pudu, which is still heavily congested due to the buses and cars and taxis stopped along the roadside. Doing so helped me get a better understanding of the area's layout. Before then I thought I'd run into Jalan Pasar before hitting Bukit Bintang. :P

At LYP I took my time. Stood in a very long line to the Maybank ATM. Slowly looked through Cycom's price list to see if I wanted anything else. A lil' chit chat. I then ended up with:

- a Linksys WRT54G Broadband Router,
- a Linksys WMP54G PCI Adapter,
- a cordless Logitech MediaPlay mouse,
- a 1GB Pendrive,
- a Logitech Headset, and
- 25 8x Mitsubishi DVD-Rs.

Quite a bit more than I expected. :P Then a quick dash through the rain to Sungei Wang for some PS2 games and a very late lunch. Then another hour of mulling around waiting for the rain to stop before I could get back to Bursa.

The only toys I can say I enjoy was the Wi-Fi upgrade and the wireless mouse/remote. I definitely can't call it a frugal purchase 'cause it wasn't. I could've made do with an old wireless mouse I had, but the rubber was kinda sticky. I could've made do with the current 802.11b that I had, but it's... well... 11Mbps. The faster 54Mbps lets me watch movies and stuff I downloaded straight from my server instead of having to copy them to my PC every time. The mouse lets me navigate the media player from the comfort of my bed. :D

The other purchases just happened, and they'll be useful sooner or later. Except the headset, which was a very bad buy. Wanted to use it for WoW raids and maybe BF2, but it's not super comfortable as I expected. I should've just waited for an opportunity to go overseas and import a wireless Plantronics headset. :\

Gotta get a Y stereo mini-plug so that I can just leave the headset plugged in.

So that was Saturday. Didn't do much on Sunday 'cept run through the entire Season 1 of Transformers. With the PC being more entertainment-center-like, the download queue has increased to include stuff like Lost Season 1, Transformers Season 2-3, and House M.D. Season 2. But with so many other things to do on the PC like WoW, I've only been watching in windows instead of full screen so that I can still do something with the PC. Only time I've put full screen to use was when I was lazy to do anything else or prefer to tuck myself under my comforter. :)

Later that night, Ayin was supposed to return from Lumut, so I stayed up and had coffee with the gang at Starbucks. Due to some delays, she would arrive only at 1 and my mom won't let me drive down to Port Klang alone. Fortunately Fish volunteered to be shotgun. Andy offered to join the convoy too, but we were concerned abt the road conditions there. Almost hit the temporary construction dividers twice that night due to poor lighting and signage. So much for 'Selangor Maju'.

After that the mocha had still retained its effect, so I volunteered for a full Sunken Temple run. Didn't realise it would take so long, and by 5.30am I was already zoning out. But it wouldn't be nice to pull out of an instance run midway, so I sucked it in and managed to last up to 8.30. Fortunately, it was a very good run, and I got a lot out of it. :) Hooray for rare item drops! <-- this is a WoW-related paragraph.

Dropped into bed, and two hours later a wake up call from Fish. We were going to town to City Square for the Times book sale and to try out the indoor shooting range. At the book sale I picked up a nice hardcover copy of Stephen King's book 5 of his Dark Tower series (which I probably won't read, but it'd look good on a bookshelf) for RM1. Also got myself Eragon and Eldest for RM70. Expensive yes, but I've always wanted to read those, even without knowing the author's writing style. It was either that or splurging on 12 Series of Unfortunate Events books. :P

Then it was off to the range for some shooting goodness. Honestly, I was rather apprehensive at the thought of handling a firearm for the first time, and the anxiety worsened from the time it was suggested and during the introduction by the firearms instructor. But after the first clip was emptied and with safety always on my mind, it was actually quite exhilirating. :) I started out with pretty consistent shots, but later on I tried experimenting more on my stance and ended up losing out to Merv and Fish in terms of accuracy. Anyways, the gun we used was a Sig Sauer .22 Mosquito, which obviously fires .22 calibre rounds. Visitors can also try weapons that fire .45 or 9mm rounds like the Glock, but we'll do that on our next visit. :) The visitors package starts at RM 187 for 50 bullets for those who are interested.

A banana-leaf lunch.
A nap at Merv's.
Mahjong.
A Thai dinner.
3 episodes of Lost Season 1.

Not bad for Labor Day activities. :)

Now back to work!

* sigh *

It's not that I haven't noticed, but I haven't really been putting much effort into my entries nowadays. The usual feelings put into most sentences are just not there anymore. Trust me, I'm experiencing 'em, but I guess I'm a little too shy to put them in print. For now. Hopefully. Perhaps it's up to me to clean up my life first before being able to come clean.

Anyways, I seem to have exhausted my supply of The O.C. to watch. I've got Episode 22 of Season 3 (which might be the season finale) on queue, but I gotta finish downloading Superman III and IV for my boss first. I'm also downloading FF7 for the PC, just so that I can experience the storyline and maybe even pick up a few more favorites from the soundtrack. So far, I'm only hypnotuned to the battle theme and One-Winged Angel. I'll be cheating of course; don't want to spend too much time on it.

In WoW, I'm still stuck at level 51. Still have things to do in ZF and Uldaman, so I've yet to progress for Maraudon runs. Slow and steady though. My guild's implemented the Guild Event Manager, but I don't wanna put anything on there with the fear of not attending my own events. :P And I discovered a Japanese-speaking guildmate too; maybe I can start putting some in practice.

In BF2, I've surprisingly made 2K points since making First Sergeant. Haven't been playing that much, but I haven't lost my edge. I'm starting to love my PKM, being able to take down squads of people without breaking a sweat. :D Think there's much room to improve though; I've seen people do 30 kills without a single death. :O But then again, they're highly ranked, so they must play like every single day. Merv is inadvertently helping me with my 'training', since the team he's on almost always loses. No offense, man. :D

At the office, I've been able to pick up the pace again after being stuck in a short rut. My fragile mind just has to take a break every few weeks or so. While I'm making good progress on my stuff, I still have to deal with the upcoming audit on our project (i.e. more work) and an upcoming renovation that will force me from my currently wide and spacious cubicle to a cramped corner with the rest of the office folk (i.e. more physical work). Kinda ironic since I just got promoted. Oh well, I've made a pact with the chief clerk to erect a wall around my area to make it more private. :)

I definitely have to finish my tax forms tonight.

And.. I've resisted the urge to migrate to PCI-Express. The cost is just too expensive for a mega-graphics and dual-core upgrade. My overclocked proc is sufficient for now, and I'll just have to live with the current graphics problems that can be rather annoying when BF2'ing (hence the urge). Imagine trying to shoot something from a tank and only be able to see panoramic black stripes flashing across the screen.

I will however, upgrade my LAN to 802.11g to save the trouble of downloading movies from my server to my PC in order to watch them, and maybe procure a decent sound card for the heck of it. :) And maybe also replace this card with an adequate if not better alternative.

stuff to watch! and others to avoid.

ES and I watched Ultraviolet Friday night. With the exception of Milla, everything else sucked. We got there a lil earlier to try out the new House of the Dead 4 at the arcade. But it was such in demand that we didn't get to play, so we settled for some Time Crisis 3. Which I could probably play on my PS2 by myself. :P

Speaking of the PS2, I think I'll bring it into my room to play on my 24". Wanna see if the gun works with LCDs as well.

And I'm a few minutes from downloading the entire Season 3 of The O.C. I like the way Azureus allows you to set priorities for each file in a torrent so that it downloads faster. That basically means I've watched the 1st episode, and can now start watching episodes 2 to 8. :)

Ooh, and the latest Nokia PC Suite has an auto update feature. I'm now on version 6.80.20 and it works very well with the WIDCOMM stack I installed earlier. Sweet! Now hopefully someone improves the Bemused protocol to allow it to control other things. :)

sakit mata

This week's news briefs:-

- I'm now able to control winamp using my nokia 6230. It's fun, but I wish I could control movies as well. Luckily for HID-capable Sony Ericsson phone users, they have an official app that allows you to simulate keystrokes using your phone. I don't have the link though, so you'll have to google it. :) In the meantime, installing the latest WIDCOMM stack was a pain, and now I can't get my Nokia PC Suite working. :\

- Almost done with the O.C season 2! Gonna start looking for season 3 now. :)

- Watched most of Nascar 3D last night. 3D is nice, but it was too short. Makes me wonder if normal PC games like BF2 can be 3D-ized. I recall looking into it a long time ago... maybe I should look into it again. Met up with Ida Maya too, from ze old primary school. It was great being able to catch up with her. :)

late nights again

As many of you know, I'm not really good at managing time. In the past few months there's been a lull in the things that I 'd like to do, so I find myself going to sleep early and all that.

Now, those days seem to be gone. Thanks to my installation of xchat on this web server, I can now resume all the manga downloads I've stopped reading since moving my computer from the living room to my lil cramped personal space. I'm doing an alphabetical browse of things I've missed and I've only reached 'Ai', which is AirGear. Read that up to Vol 7 and that kept me up to 1.30am :O

Before the browse, I've specifically searched for the latest chapters of GantZ, Alita, & Battle Royale. More to come I guess. And now that my boss is doing a load of downloading via Streamyx, I can even pilfer some seasons of TV shows like Lost and some movies from him. :D

At the same time, I've been catching up on some of the old movies that I never got around to watch. Since I've had to wait for my sis before I can go home, I've been spending my time after hours at the office watching Dude, Where's My Car?, Elektra, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and a few other things. And since this is her last week, it seems that she'll be more late than usual, and my movie supplier is not here! :(

All this watching and reading... Seems like a form of escapism. Missing something... someone... ;)

why dell = cheap

scammers. just found out that my flatscreen panel may be 6bit instead of true color 8. i knew something was amiss when shades of black were not flush from before, and i guess this confirms my suspicions.

6bit panels actually can accomodate only 262k colors, but with help from dithering and stuff like that, it seems like 16.2mil colors.

8bit panels are native at 16.7mil colors.

smart of them for omitting such info from their product pages. my mind starts asking questions, such as are those people online who gave good reviews to the dell monitors really happy? they might be, considering that dell was using higher-end samsung panels at first, then later decided to downgrade to the lower quality ones which i seem to be stuck with. yay to dell for consumer friendly practices. not.

i will never ever buy another dell. ever.

i don't know what to say, the monkeys won't do

here are the lyrics for one particularly addictive song i aoverheard on the US cartoon network while i was there. enjoy. and don't ask me how to get the song itself. :P

Artist: Animaniacs
Song: The Monkey Song
Album: Variety Pack

One Monday morning, I got up late
And there were these monkeys, outside ze gate
Ze guard went to stop them but he had no luck
The monkeys got free and they ran amok

I don't know what to say, the monkeys won't do
-Don't know what to say, the monkeys won't do
I don't know what to say, the monkeys won't do
-Don't know what to say, the monkeys won't do

My office was run by ze studio nurse
I came downstairs und what could be worse?
Ze monkeys was doing a crazy dance
They put buggies in my underpants

I don't know what to say, the monkeys won't do
-Don't know what to say, the monkeys won't do
Monkeys dance day and night and stew
-Don't know what to say, the monkeys won't do

I ran outside to get a stick
But I tell you friends, those monkeys was quick
'Cause when I returned, much to my disgrace
Those monkeys had the nurse in a mad embrace

Nurse:I don't know what to say, the monkeys won't do
Yako:For a nickel, I'll give you a clue
Dot:I didn't know your eyes were blue
I don't know what to say, the monkeys won't do

I went to me bath for a shower and shave
The monkeys gonna put me into my grave
The entire bathroom was laid to waste
And they shaved my head with minty toothpaste

I don't know what to say, the monkeys won't do
-Don't know what to say, the monkeys won't do
They is crazy nutso, I'm telling you
-Don't know what to say, the monkeys won't do

Well by zis time I was feeling dread
Zey was using a shoe brush to shine me head
I asked them to leave but they stayed around
Zey pulled the chain and ee! I went down

I don't know what to say, the monkeys won't do
-Don't know what to say, the monkeys won't do
Call my lawyer, I'm ready to sue
-Don't know what to say, the monkeys won't do

Well my patients ran out and I'm telling you sure
Tomorrow I show those monkeys the door
And if they don't leave, I'm inviting you
To my house for dumplings and monkey stew

I don't know what to say, the monkeys won't do
-Don't know what to say, the monkeys won't do
Now I'm in the stew, oh pooh!
-Don't know what to say, the monkeys won't do
Watch out for monkeys, I'm telling you
-Don't know what to say, the monkeys won't do

We're not monkeys, we're just cuckoo
Don't know what to say, the Warners won't do

what i wanted to post:
"nice, i've been looking for the title of that song all day today, spurred by Fly Guy who noted when the vocalist's name was being mentioned in the beginning of the song. I only caught "waheeda" though, so I pretty much embarassed myself asking the whole world for the latest Waheeda song.

anyway, hope you find the lyrics. :)"

back from the line dead

yay, i'm back.

server's back. phone line is back. downloading is back. everything is back. no thanks to telekom.

[finds phone line dead on monday. calls at night using my celcom line]
[dials 100]
"selamat datang ke TM. untuk bahasa malaysia, tekan 1. for english, press 2"
[presses 2]
"for products and services, press 1. to report a fault, press 2, .."
[presses 2]
"to report a telephone line fault, press 1, ..
[presses 1]
* beep beep beep*

and the line goes dead.

called again, tried BM this time. got past 121, the system asks for my number then hands me over an operator. i tell her my name and say i have a problem.

she asks me my number again (makes me wonder why i had to dial it in earlier)
she asks me my name again.
then she promises to open a technician report. or something like that.

tuesdays comes. nothing from TM yet. called that evening again 3 times and all were disconnected.

wednesday comes. managed to get a local number from the condo security guards. the call management seems different, but similar. disconnected twice so i didn't manage to speak to anyone yet again. got annoyed and went to TM's website and posted a very threatening comment on their 'Fault Management System'. it basically contained some references to taking a lift up to the upper management. called again in the evening and yay, they finally have my report on file. fix ETA is 3pm the following day. any trace of the monday call? none whatsoever.

so the moral of the story is: to be efficient is to remove all human factors. and don't be nice by default.

on the lighter side of things, i got promoted finally. and i finished watching season one of The O.C. yay me.

V for Vendetta...

...IS DA BOMB! Seriously, it's a great show. everyone, go watch it. :)

actually, i was thinking it'd be a flop, seeing as there hasn't been that many good comic conversion films. guess i underestimated the bros.

anyway, watched it with my cousin ES since we didn't have anything else to do. well, at least i didn't. it's great to actually spend time with the extended family; before this we'd only meet at family gatherings.

1u gsc seats were comfy, as usual.

and, they (1u) had a remote control (RC) tournament. watching those cars zip through the track sure makes you wanna get one of your own. :D reminds me of younger Tamiya mini 4wd days, which sadly weren't very fruitful due to lack of funds.

got back, tried to get onto WoW. realm server was down. realm status page was down too. blizzard really needs to get its act together. tried my alt server, and no one i knew was there. so the next best thing was to hop in to where steph is playing on Tichondrius. the game is actually much more refreshing when you can interact with people you're already friends with. (no offense Az, but i rarely see you online nowadays :P). also caught up with raptor and loafer, who've been playing for over a year.

i can really see myself spending more time on this server :) it's an american server too, so peak-time traffic jams are no longer an issue (well, no longer a big issue) for us foreign players. maybe i can try pull a few people from the other realms i'm playing on. :P

oo and btw, i finished the fruits basket anime. such a sweet ending. luckily i bought the manga so that i can follow the rest of the storyline! :D

furuba

i watched 11 eps of furuba last night. i love it. altho it progresses through the story very slowly, it constantly draws you in with lotsa funny bits. overall, the story is kind of sad as you start learning about each new character. kesian tohru. kesian hatori.

then i watched "Best of Banned from TV 3". :P

aaaaanyway, looks like i might not be able to catch that many eps tonight. gonna go help my cousin fix his office connection. :)

speaking of connections, i've been getting very poor service with my own streamyx lately. downloads are very slow, and almost always time out mid way. doesn't help my WoW or BF2 either.

turn it up!

HD trailers are the bomb! i only wish my monitor shows proper true color. the colors just don't seem proper. like when you have something fading out or in, you can actually see the color bands.

hopefully it's just my graphics card, and not the monitor itself. if it's just the graphics, then i'll just have to upgrade to a dual core ;) and something nice.

at the same time, i've managed to resolve some issues with the latest K-Lite Codec Pack. actually, it was just a matter of downgrading to version 1.34. the latest version had problem displaying video for some old Quicktime movies (Furuba!) and displaying subtitles for Matroska files. don't know what the problem was with QT, but MKV and OGG files were being handled by a Haali splitter, which i guess didn't agree with how the old files were structured.

so tonight, Furuba marathon! :D

in the meantime, me go download more HD trailers to watch when i get home.

building in progress

Some of you may've noticed that the site has been dysfunctional for a few days. that's because i've recently attempted a supposedly easier more streamlined way to upgrade the server's third-party applications using portupgrade. a few of your techie peeps would know that FreeBSD has a nice ports collection that allows you to easily install stuff that's not native to the FreeBSD operating system.

There doesn't seem to be much problem so far. the only obstacles i've encountered are for ports that I've previously had to manually tweak their 'Makefile''s in order to install them in a specific way that i want. not a pleasant process having to repeat these tweaks each time i upgrade, so i've managed to find solutions that are portupgrade friendly.

Another set of problems i had were ports that didn't save my previous install options. these are packages that used dialog screens to allow users to select any special components they want, so somehow this time i didn't tick off as many components as i did before causing some configuration inconsistencies. luckily quick tweaks of the config files did the trick.

So enough about that. since my last post i've watched Rahtree, a thai horror comedy, and Hostel, a Tarantino movie hoping to match the goriness of the likes of Audition. doesn't quite reach there, but at least the storyline's better. Also level 44 in WoW, and i've created an alternate character on PvP realm Dragonmaw to play with whenever my original realm Khaz'goroth is mad full. My BF2 installation seems to work now, although i haven't gotten a proper game in to test my chopper flying skills against tougher odds (they're a lot easier to shoot down it seems).

Cuzzies not able to make it that weekend, unfortunately. :(

The staff of Black & Decker Asia Pacific (M) Sdn Bhd could use some English lessons. They could also use some training in customer call management. This one guy promised to call me back yesterday and hasn't done so. It was hard enough trying to communicate to him that I want one 'RT1000'. refer to your own damned catalogue dammit! and don't bring in a power tool if you don't plan on having accessories available!

And my bro's been sick since Sunday. Very high fever that's not quite consistent. Early blood test doesn't show anything. Well, he seems fine now. Somehow managed to garner enough energy to go to a cybercafe with his friends today.

something's definitely wrong with me. forced to a diet of non-milk, non-fruit products, otherwise i'll crap water again. i knew i should've stayed home last night instead of having an excellent steamboat dinner with the gang.

*drools*

hope i recover in time for next week's steaks. :D

anyway, this condition i'm in doesn't seem to be a constant state. the tummy only acts up in the morning, and when it clears i'll be fine till the next day usually. but it's scary, and the doctor may have a lead on something bigger. hopefully it's not too big, but we'll see what happens in the next few days.

well, my case-modding has been postponed for another week. can't figure out how to open fish's workmate. will need to pick up a few small items too from the curve. in the meantime, i need to check with our beloved IRB on my recently-received 2003 tax adjustment (they sure are taking their time), and make an appointment with the aircond service people. monitor's whine has gone to annoyingly higher levels, and i think the heat is taking its toll. can't stand the humidity either.

[edit 4:33pm]
in my sullen mood i forgot to mention a few other things. finally got myself to watch Howl's Moving Castle, a Ghibli production based on the book by Diana Wynne Jones. following Ghibli's tradition of really nice movies, it is.. well.. really nice! it is however, an adaptation, hence there are some parts that seem rushed or disjointed. but all in all the movie worked well for me as a break from WoW. :P

i also caught The Longest Yard, which is another nice one, and soon i'll be able to watch Fullmetal Alchemist the movie. yay!

revamp

nando's flaming hot peri-peri for lunch +
tempeyek (those yummy cracker-like treats with peanuts on top) for tea +
apartment cafe's penang fried kuew teow for dinner

=>

vomit +
liquid shit

so i was home for the better part of the afternoon yesterday. slept through most of it.

was hoping to get on WoW for a quickie to chat someone up, but my realm was down for 'urgent maintenance'. five hours after it came up, another 6 hours of downtime for 'scheduled maintenance'.

so... when exactly do we get to play? :(

anyways, my health hasn't been in good order lately. gotta see how i can seamlessly put in some healthy things into my life without breaking my yearning for the stuff i love.

for exercise, i'll walk up the road from plaza pantai to menara telekom each morning. upon returning home, i'll walk up the stairs to my apartment.

for cleanliness, i just gotta take an hour off after work to arrange my belongings and get in touch with the world.

that should be sufficient for now.

sunday is WoW day

don't count on me leaving this room very soon. :D

'cept maybe to eat and bathe.

over the week i've lowered my cpu fan speed a few hundred RPM, making me worried when WoW crashed on me. hasn't happened in a while, so it might just be evil Blizzard screwing with me. last night's incident though was neither caused by my experiments or Blizzard's general disregard for customer service.

it was closer to home. it was... TMnet!

here i was, roaming the distant Plaguelands, avoiding monsters and demons that i could never have beaten. i end up in the Ruins of Andorhal, a seemingly cosy countryside village now haunted by skeletons and ghouls. halfway through, the monsters didn't seem to care about my presence, and i thought i was scot-free! i keep on moving, to reach the Scarlet Monastery where my party was waiting for me. but something was weird... all the way up never did i meet a single player, or a monster, or a friend NPC. felt like i was detached from the world itself.

then i get disconnected. and this continues a few more times till i realised that the international links were down and i could no longer connect.

looking at the time of the incident, it seemed that the downtime was scheduled somehow. seems just too convenient for a downtime to happen when most of the general population was asleep (it was about 3am). yet TMnet never sent out a notice, nor did they send out any apology for the downtime.

now that's government service!

anyway, it's about time i stopped purchasing unnecessary things and start saving for certain holiday seasons this year. target is Australia. so yesterday my family and i went to the Curve for some lunch and shopping. it would be the last shopping spree for me, hopefully. :P so i finally got my pair of gloves from the larger Ace branch. Leather Driver gloves intended for light construction. finally, something closer to my size. the male medium size were a bit too large still, so i just went what the heck and got myself the women's size. no difference at all between them, 'cept that they fit my skinny fingers better and were light blue.

at least they weren't pink, or had polka dots.

so i'm probably going to start making holes in my puter next weekend. gotta start planning the work.

at the same time, got myself a new showerhead to try. the existing ones were getting rusty. didn't have any clue of the actual Gallons Per Minute (GPM) effect, so i picked up a 1.5GPM water saver one. picked up some teflon sealing tape too, but my shower mount threads were so short that it would be a little too tough to put on.

this one definitely saves water, but i miss the pressure from the old showerhead. let's see if my sister agrees when she gets back from sailing later today. :P anyway, the success of this showerhead being able to fit will let us start looking at new showerheads for the other bathrooms. probably get those fancy multi-mode ones.

it's the start of another DIY frenzy. hope i won't have to spend for this one though. :P

another update about nothing in particular

Lee Kee Choong! :D

an excerpt from a current conversation with my sister:-

myuu says:
should we buy a scumbuster?
kittenz says:
what's that?
myuu says:
it's like a dustbuster, but for scum.
kittenz says:
we have scum?
kittenz says:
what exactly is scum? =D
myuu says:
the stuff that's stuck on our bathroom walls
kittenz says:
ooooh... how much is it?
myuu says:
slightly less than 300 i think
kittenz says:
:S
myuu says:
ahaha
myuu says:
btw, does the hardbrush work?
kittenz says:
i like it... haven't tried it on the walls, but i used it for the back of the doors
myuu says:
oo okie.. we'll try that on the walls first
myuu says:
if doesn't work, we get the hard version
myuu says:
if that doesn't work either, we get.. the scumbuster!!!
kittenz says:
lol, ok

yeah, we have issues with our bathroom cleanliness. now that the apartment could be mine, i gotta start fixing things up.

i've been playing so much WoW that my mom has started getting annoyed. hmmm. it's not that the gameplay itself keeps me at the puter, it's actually something else altogether. i'll give you the details if it turns out for the better.

i'm so messed up. i'm actually hard at work through lunch time.

i knew i shouldn't have eaten that muruku the way i eat rice. but i couldn't help it, my throat's much better now, and it sucked not having spicy food for weeks.

i like food. :D~~

and i'm sorry to the other people whose smses i didn't respond to, or whose invitations to leave the house i have declined. not that i'm anti social or anything.. it's just that... society has so many channels to communicate on! we're being swamped i tell you! whee! even my genius mind can't take the traffic! did i just say that? yes! omg! i'm going mad.

it's been good to my wallet too, this staying in. seem to have a lot left over from my last pay. but then again, i haven't looked at my recent credit card bills. speaking of which... i think i'm overdue for hsbc. :(

recent splurges:-
- TOY! rotary tool + accessories. :) rm500
- OLD CAR! leaky gasket and radiator pipes. rm500
- PRESSIE! fix ayin's T1. rm140

and i'm still paying my 12-month installment on the monitor. mmmm.. i like my monitor. maybe i should've gotten the 30". yea, i'll get that for my AMD 64 X2 rig. :D

and there are people on lowyat.net selling 42" plasma TVs for 8500! philips! that's too much man! how do you expect people to save when there are things going for such nice prices? argh...

still waiting for the age where money is irrelevant and robots do the work.

my new year's resolutions is...

1920x1200 :D

mosfets. pwm. the hidden key to overclocking stability. these are a bunch of chips that regulate voltage to the processor, and are usually hooked in around the cpu socket. their temperatures can go as high as 120 C before burning out, but in my case things go crappy as soon as they hit 70.

if only i knew about these when i had my first motherboard. :P

anyway, happy chinese new year to all.

tagged

my, how chain letters have evolved nowadays.

i've been tagged. here are the rules:

1. The tagged victim has to come up with 8 different points of their perfect lover.
2. Need to mention the sex of the target.
3. Tag 8 victims to join this game & leave a comment on their comments saying they've been tagged.
4. If tagged the 2nd time, there’s no need to post again.

So.... here's the golden 8 for what's in my belief is a perfect female lover. Lover being defined as:

Pronunciation: 'l&-v&r
Function: noun
4 a : PARAMOUR b : a person with whom one has sexual relations

1. sexy
2. adventurous
3. all four limbs in good order
4. understands the geek way
5. long hair
6. speaks english
7. free :P
8. malay, oriental or caucasian origin
9. must be able to survive close proximity with me

and i tag back all the persons listed here minus myself plus nad-chan herself. :P no rule saying i can't tag you back, muahahah

quickies

my mom reveals that she doesn't like to cook much anymore due to the tiring job of cleaning up. and us peeps in the house aren't eating together and interacting much. time to pay more attention. haven't found the will to WoW lately anyhow.

tweaked website to look better on widescreen monitors. :) might need to change the theme too.

turns out the person whom i bought my new motherboard from, whopper, didn't flash the bios to the latest like he claimed he did. grrr.

holiday mode

office hours are finally over. i'd normally continue with work while waiting for my sis, but this time my mind just can't take it.

so instead, let's talk about some random topics. things that doesn't need too much thought. or at least thoughts that require deadlines.

so.. let's talk about me. lesseee... a lot of people claim i look chinese. based on my experience so far, i won't deny it. however, that does not mean i can pass myself as a fully chinese person. it's true that when i meet chinese strangers, they usually start talking to me in cantonese. but at the same time, when i meet malay strangers, they'd talk to me as if talking to any normal malay.

so, in conclusion, i looks both malay and chinese. at the same time! i look chinese to chinese, and malay to malay. i guess this happens cuz of the way we socially interact. relationships are usually linked by something, most of the time similarity. when you meet someone for the first time, you try to relate to him/her, checking what your similarities are. since eye contact is ALWAYS (usually) the first mode of interaction (unless you're drunk), you try to see what physical features the person has that are similar to yours. hence a chinese person will look for chinese features, and etc etc. later of course, the relationship develops based on further interaction via action and talk, overriding any first impressions. so as soon as i start talking, or say "i don't understand chinese", the relationship takes another turn for better or worse.

after reading back my previous paragraph, i'd like to apologize to anyone who has visual disabilities. color blindness not included.

so as much as i want to act chameleon, i can't, because i can be perceived in a variety of ways, even in ways i don't want to be.

so to my friends, please keep me safe.

and to the next topic. do toilet seats belong up or down? i haven't done any research on this, but the more tidy female characters in The Sims prefer them down. for guys, it would usually stay up, cuz otherwise stray jets might hit the 'areas of concern'. we can't let the ladies suffer like that, can we? on the other hand, leaving it down will allow users to see what's on the 'areas of concern' so that measures can be taken to prepare those 'areas' for occupation. at the end of the day, most people after being relieved couldn't care less of what they leave behind, so you'd have to look out for it anyway.

so i vote down. lift up before using, for the male urinating position, and put it back down after. irregardless, wash your hands. with soap. :P

if only our public toilets were smart enough to clean our seats for us, and to also determine our gender and mode of execution to prepare the proper setting. it'll probably happen sooner or later. we'll see.

somewhere in the mess called my head, i thought up of an idea just in case i were to leave my current profession. i'd call it the IT Bakery. it'd be a bakery, like bread talk and their counterparts, except that the venue will be immensely packed with technology in action. and we'd sell these techs too, and maybe do tech consulting on the side. we'd also have stuff from thinkgeek.com and all the stuff that make geeks go crazy. details are sketchy but at least it's something to start with.

usually when an idea starts, you drill down to the product to make sure it meets market demands and all that. but somehow my mind wandered off to the venue's security system, which is designed to protect patrons more than the tech in the store. with so much expensive stuff lying around, you don't want to skimp on security, man. so i was thinking of having a foot-wide grid of walls that can drop down from the ceiling in cases of emergency. an operator at the back, severely protected by panic-room like infrastructure, will be able to oversee the automatons of this system. the walls will drop to isolate patrons from intruders if they're apart, with intervention necessary by the operator if they're together. the walls would have holes in them, big enough to breathe and small enough to avoid bullets from passing through. each wall will have its own servo to allow flexible escape routes. the walls also, would have to be bullet proof to a certain extent. vertical-wise, the walls would be hollow, allowing smaller multiple versions of themselves in between for those tight situations where certain limbs would need to be pinned down. the lower edge of these walls can't be sharp, maybe padded, and are pressure sensitive to avoid crushing people (altho overrides would be allowable).

this is assuming of course, that law provides that an owner of a premise is allowed use of lethal force to defend his/her property.

to avoid attacks from outside, the outer windows would also be thick and bulletproofed. and to avoid collateral damage during police raids and to also help friendly forces in, the set of windows would lift up and hide itself away like a garage door, and the grid walls can lift up at certain places, triggered by cooperation with police forces, to reveal the perps.

and it goes on like that.

usually i wouldn't immediately post any of my funky brain childs publicly, but otherwise i'd forget all about it and wouldn't be able to revel in my madness. and i don't have the resources to implement these ideas anyway, so might as well let someone else try. of course, please tell me if you do. :P i don't talk about cost, since that would then make it within my circle of influence and therefore limited in some other ways. no point being sensible when ranting. :P

woo.. that's a lot of text. and i have another 20 minutes to spare.

hm... bleh. oh, and the bakery would need to be backed by publications like Stuff (*winks* at tiff & steph).

damn, i've been gritting my teeth a lot today without realising it. was it the coffee, or the workload? hm.

hm hm hm. here comes the hm section where i can't really think of what to type.

*10 minutes later*

yay, sms from sis! bubbye! yay for my colleague too, who dropped by my lonely cubicle for a quick chat.

exasperating last day

feeling kinda out of it right now. so many things to do, yet unsure which to begin with.

must be the effects of that grande mocha i had a while ago. drinking coffee has never been one of my finer points, and it doesn't seem to get any better with age.

ah yes, i admit, today i tuang. was planning to go back to the pad and rest since i'm still recovering from thursday's viral onslaught. but then tiff was free, and nearby, and i had some shopping to do so i ended up at mid valley instead.

probably half of my company's female population know i was there. :P

well, az1 seemed to have had something come up, so it was just me, tiff, steph, and their colleague named marlina. the fun crowd, woo hoo! before we met up for lunch at oasis, i was lounging about toys r us, MPH, and ace hardware while waiting for the catcha-nists. no new books to read, altho there seems to be a sudden surge in volume of books by this certain female author (can't remember her name) and i was tempted to pick up one of her books. but seeing how i ended up sleeping at 3am last night to finish The Saga of Darren Shan, i don't think i want to get caught up in 'a moment' for a while. :P

how i ended up at toys r us is a mystery. thought maybe i'd have much time to spend before meeting up with tiff and gang. went in looking, reminding myself to pick up gundam seed from kr0 (who hasn't finished watching it yet!) and keeping an eye out for those cute BitChar-G remote control cars (which seem to have been phased out). otherwise, nothing interesting.

ace hardware was my main destination. below are the items i wanted to pick up, or have picked up, and where i'll pick them up from, or where i have picked them up from. ;) :-

- black & decker rtx-1 rotary tool - purchased today from ace hardware!
- rotary tool flex-shaft - purchased today from ace hardware!
- protective face visor - purchased today from ace hardware!
- medium/heavy duty gloves - can't find my size :(
- face mask - left overs from haze scare.
- ear muffs - miniplugs from F1 paddock.
- acrylic sheets and other material - waiting for info from ndb. ;)

that's 500+ splurged today. :D will take pics as soon as i find my arghed camera charger!!!!

simple lunch at oasis. talked about WoW, office antics, and drinking antics. catcha employees are... in a league of their own. ;) very different from what my sister experiences at Watson Wyatt, and at the other end of the spectrum compared to my working life. hmmm....

ah, and steph reminded me how i helped her get her WoW nickname, lol! i miss irc days really, but going back now will never be as fun as before. oh well.

and it looks like i'm keeping the monitor. backlight problem seems to have went away, and humming noise isn't too annoying and easily fixed with a short shut off of the monitor. well, at least i have 5 years to see if it'll go crappy on me. after that, hopefully the new SED (Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display) monitors will be out, and this monitor might be dissected for education purposes. ;P

the doctor who won't give mc's

dr aslam qureshi. every time i see him he only gives me a time chit. compared to the other doctors in the clinic, he also gives less medication.

i told him it hurts to swallow.
i told him my body's aching all over.
i told him last night i had a bad fever.

and all he sez is "it'll get worse or better depending on your resistance".

wtf?!

well, next time i see him on the roster, i'll definitely ask for the other doctor on duty, irregardless of who he/she is. this guy seems to have joined the clinic because they had a shortage anyways.

if he's the only one, then i'll just try my company's dispensary.

aha

dell called me this morning. the person didn't seem keen on talking about the refund, and instead talked abt the issues i'm having with the monitor. well, i told her the truth saying that the backlight issue seems to have diminished a bit and she was eager to close the ticket but i didn't agree to it. i also mentioned the humming problem which surfaces if i have the monitor up and running then entire day, and they had a techie call abt it. the problem did surface a few times, but i didn't bother monitoring it cuz i thought i'd be sending it back. hopefully i can get it recorded somehow.

need to get second opinions on the backlight and i've been looking for my camera charger all over but to no avail. can't use my sister's cam either. :( well, we'll see how it goes.

now, where was i?

been a while hasn't it? just haven't found the time to plonk myself in front of my website and start writing. in fact, i have to leave for dinner with my dad in about 15 mins, so i'll have to make this a quickie.

so... where did i left off... ah yes, the weekend before last. thursday night it was. ate old lemang i did. suffered for 7 days i have. couldn't sleep through a bad tummy ache, which lasted throughout the week and throughout certain important events. fortunately, my mom provided her special natural remedy of a high fibre fruit diet, and it didn't get any worse.

let's just skip the weekend. :P

i've been trying to spend as much time as i can with this 24" monitor, as i've already scheduled for a refund. no matter how nice it is, dell tech support is not willing to go the extra mile for me in my quest for a perfect display (this current one has very bad backlight bleeding) and attributes all my complaints to be within 'industrial standards'. evidence that our country is trailing behind in both manufacturing quality and customer service. i should've heeded those mental alarms when i first saw 'Made in China' on the box.

at the same time, with some of my funds released, i can now start on my case-modding project. having borrowed fish's dad's work table, i'm now in the midst of acquiring the tools and safety equipment necessary. i've even taken out my sistem out of the casing and it's running on a plastic box next to the computer table. pictures later. :P it's running off a 2nd hand Abit IS7 motherboard which seems to be performing well so far, but evidently it's the dust on my CPU heatsink that's been degrading performance. need to get some cans of compressed air for that.

as for things going on at work, i stayed back friday night and sunday afternoon trying to fix some problems other people caused to no avail. well, at least i can try to claim for off-in-lieu again. better do it now before management decides to introduce more dubious policies.

i'm now first sergeant in BF2, and level 31 in WoW. :) it also looks like i won't be returning my old hard drive after all, since there seems to have been some funny symptoms with my new one. tested my PSU using a digital multimeter i bought for my botched soldering project, and the numbers seem ok. hopefully it was just the motherboard. still waiting for my new cpu cooler before returning my bad RAM.

till next time.

RMA season

to crucial, a set of sticks that don't carry forward the 1's,

to dell, an old revision of a monitor that's supposed to be better,

to maxtor/seagate, a drive that can't find it's things in time.

will be passing my ram back to dinster when i meet him to pick up a new cpu cooler.

will be calling dell tomorrow to tell them how disappointed i am about the bleeding backlight and the irritating humming.

will be looking for the cycom receipt. :P

misplaced faith

found out before dinner that it's my ram that has been causing so much problems with system stability. not surprising, but i was hoping that it wouldn't turn out as expected. what was supposed to make my overclocked system stable turns out to be the culprit. harapkan pagar, pagar makan padi is the malay phrase that comes to mind.

let's step back a few years to see why i have blindly placed my trust in Crucial, even with all the recent bad rep. Crucial used to be Micron, a company which churned out pretty decent SDRAM back in the Pentium III days. I always ordered Micron CAS2 RAM, even if they're a tad expensive than usual, and have never had problems with them ever.

now, it's just a name i want to forget.

before we start another "you shouldn't have overclocked" discussion, bear in mind that the RAM i bought is manufactured specifically to keep up with my current overclocked CPU speed. my front side bus was upped from 200 to 250 MHz, and PC-4000 DDR SDRAM should be able to follow that without any stress at all!

luckily i still have my old ram to use when the time comes for me to RMA both sticks. i don't want anything to do with Crucial any more, so there's no point keeping one good stick and sending back another. nowadays, there are just so many alternatives, providing the same level of warranty (lifetime). and they're much cheaper too.

now, hopefully my supplier is as helpful as he says he is.

lunch break

sigh.. all it takes is one phone call to ruin a noon nap.

merv and az were trying to get me out of office to play mahjong. but i shouldn't give in to temptation each time. besides, it's a little wasteful to take half day off now considering i have only another 2 1/4 hours to spend at the office.

my WoW exploits at the office have finally paid off. while something is causing the game to crap out on my desktop, it runs quite ok on the notebook. the graphics may be sub standard, but it seems workable. it'll be useful for those late nights waiting for ayin to finish her work. she's going to start her practical training soon, and i can only guess that she'll be required to work long hours.

anyways, i got my sis to start on WoW. even her bf is contemplating on getting himself a copy, altho he's still uncertain whether the monthly fee is worth it. even i am having doubts, as we've been having a LOT of problems with the server lately. constant lags, and quite a few crashes since the new 1.9 patch are causing much frustration among users of our Khaz'goroth realm.

my bro has also started playing, altho BF2 is still his primary thing. i guess it's better that way, since i don't want him to get addicted to more things. in fact, as soon as we see trouble with his school work, he'll never touch the PC again.

besides WoW, i didn't do much over the weekend 'cept for cleaning up the house a bit, as well as helping Fish move to his brother's house at Damansara Kim. his house will be renovated soon, so he'll only be there temporarily with the rest of his family. being only a helper, i did not fully experience the stress in its entirety, but it seemed that i'd be able to cope with my own moving sooner or later. when my family first moved into our current home, i only cared about transporting my computer. :P being young sure had its privileges. saying that, i don't think i'll be sparing any of my siblings the work. :P

i liked his temp home, being new and somewhat modern even though it's located in a cramped area in PJ. i thought the renovation was done rather well, and it's really making me itch for my own landed home. there's still some affordable double storey link houses in the vicinity that are still 'quite' affordable (if we pooled all our money together). at the same time, my sibs tell me that my dad wants to transfer over his share of the apartment to me. a very lucrative offer, but i'm afraid the high service charges alone will kill me (i.e. force me to quit WoW among other things). well, we'll see if that upcoming promotion comes through and make a decision then.

sigh, any mention of promotion these days makes me feel disillusioned.

busy busy busy

blowin' dro, 24's, that how all my niggas roll!

today's the last day of work for the year. woke up with a splitting headache, and i couldn't get out of bed a while. fortunately, despite having idiots on the road, i managed to rush to the office in time (dropping myself off at the lobby to clock in and park the car properly right after).

gonna have a barbeque at zoe's place this sunday, and i was chargred with picking up some stuff from the local hypermarkets. so my sibs and i went to the curve for dinner and some shopping. the main road between the curve and ikano was closed for decorations, so there was a pretty long line of cars waiting at a particular junction to get into that road (because somehow they didn't realise it was closed).

luckily my sis was there earlier, and she knew that there were 2 lanes (not 1) that turn into that junction so she didn't have much of a problem then. she also knew of the back way in, which we took to bypass this mass of jam.

we had dinner at marche movenpick. although it was my idea to go there, looking at the rib-eye stick that my lil bro ordered, i can't help but think how expensive kids' tastes are nowadays. i had my usual plain rosti and sausage. beef rosti, and lamb sausage weren't available. :(

after dinner, we made a short stop at borders, and moved on to tesco. got us plates, mushrooms, spoons, forks, drinks, foil. were supposed to get a few other things, but they were either out of stock or missing from memory. had to make a few calls to the food and bbq maestro merv to confirm a few things, since i've never really shopped for a bbq before. what can i say, there's just not much opportunity when you're living in an apartment.

got home. WoWed for a while. slept. end of story.

wide is right

getting a new monitor, no matter what it is, is definitely worth every cent.

especially if it's big, wide, doesn't emit radiation, and doesn't strain your eyes. :)

only problems now are the nagging, and not being able to move the mouse cursor across the screen in a single wrist motion. will post some pics up later. angelina jolie never looked so good.

well, here i am, back at work again. very hard to get up today, having been away from work (for only 4 days though) with the dark skies and pre-rain humidity. was even 5 mins late cuz the cars were not parked in their usual positions and i had to go back up to get another set of keys.

sigh, working during the holiday season is tough!

(edit 30/12 1:00pm)

pics are up! :D and, did i mention that the monitor comes with a variety of inputs, as well as 4 usb ports and card readers? i was looking up and down for my camera charger, but when i couldn't, i just popped out the CF card and slotted it into the side. works like a charm! :D

cuti-cuti rumah!

doh, just realised all WoW realms are down for weekly maintenance. :(

taking a break sure is nice. will still be on leave till tomorrow. hope i don't forget how to work :D

by the way, merry christmas, and a happy new year to all! :D

was planning to to go town today, but WoW kept me home all morning, so whatever was left of the afternoon was spent repairing the two rear door handles of my Waja. can't go tomorrow either, since my new 'view' is coming tomorrow. :DDD

hm.. hope i can just steal away for a bit. need to get some cooling for my southbridge, which i think is causing some usb and filesystem problems.

maybe i should just trash this MSI motherboard and look for a second-hand Abit/ASUS one.

arghhhh stop the splurge already!

well anyway, time to start rearranging the furniture.

splurge-fest

forgive me god, for i have splurged. i have spent my $ away.

3.5k on a wider view,
1k on some computer brain, and
170 on a bondage to virtuality.

forgive me god, for i have paid. donated some part of my life away.

31 hours, this week alone,
exploring worlds on the computer mone.
living quarters full of stuff,
and all my savings, never grow.

forgive me.

tragedy in progress

looked out my office window today to witness a fire at one of the neighboring setinggan communities. it was spreading rapidly, helped out by the strong winds. can see tiny masses of people congregating at one area, and lotsa motorcycle lights heading away.

heard sirens, and saw one engine on the federal highway. didn't seem like it was going fast enough.

hope no one is hurt.

this entry is a work in progress. more snapshots to come.

(edit 18/12 11:25am)

the shots look very dim on my computer, since they're saved without the gamma adjustments. but they should appear quite alright on anyone else's pc.

it's spending time!

yay yay money in the bank. time to splurge!

1300 to RAM.
150 to HSBC Visa.
the rest to Maybank Mastercard.

then it's
a 12-month installment on a Dell 2005FPW monitor!
and maybe the case-modding tools.

anyway, i almost started world of warcraft last night. i would've, if it weren't for the 287MB patch i had to download. they have their own torrent client, and that basically messed up my network connection (darn d-link!), so i had to disable its peer-to-peer feature and leave it on overnight.

at least i finished resident evil 4. :) now to play haunting grounds! it's so scary, i love it! well, not really scary scary, but the fact that the main character is a helpless girl without any weapons is intense!

bloody maybank!

basket! i just realised i've been in a perpetual overdraft loop on my Personnel Current Account (PCA)!

ever since maybank2u and autopay, i've rarely had the need to issue any cheques. seems i only do that when i want to pay my car insurance. so i thought, we leave any credit in that account? not getting any dividends from it anyway.

so i leave the balance at RM 0. however, maybank charges me RM 10 twice a year for heck's sake, so the last charge brought my balance into negative. then they say i've overdrawn my account!

so i top it up back to zero.

then they charge me RM 5 interest. overdrawn again!

so i top it up back to zero.

then they charge me RM 5 interest. overdrawn again!

and again, and so on and so forth. gawd. think this has been happening since june! that comes to one oldtimer at chili's. :(

sigh. the customer service rep told me i have to go back to the branch if i want to try to get these charges waived. don't think i'll even bother though.

anyway, anyone got any dell coupons. i wanna get a new monitor to soothe my ailing eyes. :D

phew

everything is somewhat in order now. brb. sleep time. :P

(edit @ 9:02pm)

if you missed my quickie, here's a background of what happened: was planning to upgrade to freebsd 6.0 over the weekend, but after putting it off quite a bit, i only did the cutover on sunday night. suffered some graphics problem during boot, but managed to bypass it via the boot loader. the rest of the subsystems were a bit of a pain though. the gnome upgrade script pretty much rebuilt every single ported application i had, so along the way it also disabled my web and email.

that wasn't the tricky part. thought i'd upgrade to apache 2.2 while i'm at it. turns out that some of the 3rd party modules i was using were not built for 2.2. so i went back to 2.0, while having to redo the build a few times to make sure my security settings were ok.

this post was made right after rebuilding php. and suphp. and suexec. :P

so in conclusion, my apologies to everyone dependent on this site. obsessive readers = 0. scratchboard users = 3. may future upgrades be without pain.

so....
i'm now planning my finances for the month. it's good to have access to payroll results. :D payday is early this month, and there's some debt that needs clearing. but aside from that, i've already placed orders for new RAM (crucial ballistix z503) and the case-modding plan is still on.

one thing that concerns me are all the recent crucial deaths. seems that the last few batches would die after at most 3 months of use (within their rated limits). some even die after a day or two. scary. but hopefully i'll be getting a batch that's fixed. otherwise, my supplier dinster@lowyat has promised to help in any RMA process. even if it has to be every 3 months.

well, that's a huge chunk of cash there. another thing that's tempting would be a nice LCD monitor. haven't been able to focus on text on bright colors lately. gotta get my eyes checked. there's a thread on lowyat.net for a pretty good 19" one (listed here) for RM 999. aaaa temptation!

as for my case-modding, the first step is to check out the kind of work people have done on their own computers. some of them are very very impressive. breathtaking even. but they probably have the DIY experience and their own workshops to back them up. at the moment, i have neither, so i won't concentrate much on aesthetics; much attention is needed on the basic need of good airflow.

i also wondered what people have done to cases similar to mine. i bought my case years back, and the only thing i could remember that it was either made by InWin or Enlight. after browsing some pictures found via google, i discovered that mine was an InWin Q500, one of better full ATX towers back in the day. based on that info, i find myself a few interesting links:-

pasta, nerds, & clock speed

related? nope.

the night b4 yesterday, tiff, merv, and i met up at ikano for dinner. wired's mom's b'day was coming up soon, and merv was looking at a wireless panasonic steam iron. merv picked me up on the way (yay). so there we were, at harvey norman, checking out prices with some smses/calls to ozzieland.

and.... we found.... nothing.

so the hunger pangs were coming on. we ate at fasta pasta, where the pasta is fasta than its flava. and yet not much fasta than a sleepwalking turtle. they didn't key in all of merv's orders, and the food itself wasn't so great. bodhi tree serves much better food. :D

and tiff bought us nerds (yay)! she was looking for clothes mainly, while merv was on the phone a lot, while i was looking at passing chicks. also checked out prices at the ace store there, but it's just the same anywhere.

last night, i decided to stay home. no salsa for me (sorry merv). had dinner indoors and took my time reseating my heatsink onto the cpu, since temperatures were a tad too high (65 C with case closed). while that happened, i just tweaked the voltages a bit, and managed to get 3.75GHz stable. this time i also upped the RAM voltage, since overvolted RAM don't overheat much. think i'll try again for 3.9 tonight.

also ran a few benchmarks to get a feel of the new motherboard. generally, the ratings are slightly older than my previous motherboard. and dual channel memory only works with 2 dimm slots, and not 4 as before. so here i am with 1GB of unused memory. probably gonna stick those into the server later.

projects

the garage - php project. on hold.
myuucon - system integration project. no new developments planned.
4ghz - overclocking project. on hold pending procurement of new parts.

here i am planning for my next experiment: case modding. it basically ties back to the overclocking project, mainly to improve airflow and perhaps make my computer look slightly nicer. tools and safety equipment are required, and i've managed to get some quotes from ace hardware:-

- black & decker rtx-1 rotary tool. a handheld drill-like thingie, but with attachments that allow you to cut and grind metal. rm 280.

- faceshield. shields the all-important facial features and organs from sparks and breaking bits. rm 58.
- safety/construction gloves. rm 13.
- aluminum grille. optional. traps dust and bugs. rm 26.
- acrylic panels. optional. serve as good side windows. can be purchased from lowyat.net forums.

- other related items: breathing mask, masking tape, cardboard, fan grilles.

everything comes up to about rm 400. gotta start saving.

anyone wanna contribute some side panel designs? :D

breaking news

good evening. this just in.

this morning, the security forces of a very tall building here received an anonymous call from someone claiming to be a member of a group of misfits. the caller claimed that something was misplaced somewhere within the area. due to that, the inhabitants of all nearby buildings went out to play to avoid any possibility of experiencing serious health issues.

on to the next bulletin. a scheduled fire drill in the afternoon may have caused the disappearance of several workers in the area. the authorities are still investigating their whereabouts.

rest in pieces

damn, my site looks weird on Firefox/FreeBSD/Gnome.

very eventful day today. yesterday too. let's jog my memory a bit.

i planned to visit Tiff at the PC Fair on saturday, wanting to go with her and all that, but i woke up late and was already messing around with my motherboard by the time i called her.

grabbed a few cookies for lunch, and took the LRT to pasar road. it was my first time there, and the stuff they sell there are quite interesting. there's fish. fighting ones plus the assortment of fishy stuff. and electronics and hardware gadgets. a lot of stalls selling dubious items too.

identified the regular electronics shop eugene goes to, thanks to a few international smses and a call to merv. standwell. only mr. kwan, the boss there, knew what i really wanted. picked up 4 trimpots (trimming potentiometers. wanted 50kohm ones, when i checked only 1 of them is, while the rest was 100k). also got myself a multimeter, some fluxed solder and helping hands (and some electrical tape from the next store).

got home. whipped out my brother's soldering iron that he got free from his realrobots subscription. here begins my droop mod adventure.

a droop mod is basically a modification done to a motherboard to stop it from losing voltage when the CPU is under load.

it involves putting a resistor at certain points to trick the voltage regulator into thinking that the voltage is too low.

i didn't have a proper workplace, so i reserved some floor space near the balcony window. i'd have plenty of light and marble to rest the iron on, but a backache was inevitable.

first, i practiced the soldering bit with the legs of the trimpot, creating a messy yet workable piece of art. that was the easy part. i already noticed that the soldering iron wasn't working so well, but i continued using it, to my folly.

by then, it was already 6. and i was supposed to have arrived at JL's place for our trip to town. so i put everything down reluctantly and rushed off to Bangsar.

traffic was good, so we made it to Times Square in good time. JL plans to audition for the post of Sports Toto announcer, so we were there at level 13 to witness the draw results that day.

even royal ceremonies aren't as serious as these. no handphone noises allowed. a lot of security guards. a lot of suitcases. everything mentioned once, is mentioned again as confirmation. everything is explicitly shown to the video camera as evidence.

i guess even random fate can be tampered with.

i always thought that the numbers were generated by computers, but they're actually determined by a torrent of air in 7 distilling-bottle-looking thingies.

anyway, i forget the exact details. ask JL. :P watching balls floating around for an hour was rather tiring. i'd explain more actually, but i'm rather bushed at the moment too.

after that, we went over to Sg Wang to pick up my serviced PS2, and we had a normal filling dinner at Shokudo in low yat.

sunday arrives.

couldn't sleep well, thinking about the stuff i need to do to the motherboard. woke up around 9, and tossed in bed for an hour or two. when i did get up, i went straight for the soldering iron.

despite some difficulty, i managed to get everything soldered right. at least it seemed so. now all i had to do was set the resistor to 28k, and all should be well. i wasn't sure how to do this, so i tried smsing eug to no avail, and resorted to posting a newbie question on EOCF. at that point i had a lunch appointment, so i left it at that.

lunch. met up with Ash whom I got to know on friendster. there was an awkward exchange of SMSes earlier (sorry :P), so it was a good opportunity to get to know one another. we meet at uptown, ate at killeneys. she brought a friend, whose name was May i think, and we all had a good conversation on relationships.

one interesting point brought up was that men always portray themselves as having options (in choosing partners of the opposite sex for whatever). in reality, an 'option' would be picked up immediately if it was viable. but a single guy with options doesn't really have any. sure, as a last resort, but thinking back the person wouldn't have taken up any of them anyway.

i think i'm losing myself here. :P argh.

got home. whee, a reply on EOCF. i'm supposed to test the resistance of the multimeter BEFORE soldering it on. silly me. unsoldered one leg, accidentally ripped the other connection from the motherboard.

here's when things went wrong.

the iron was totally off at this point. i couldn't use the tip of it for anything, so i ended up improvising with the sides. due to my unpreparedness and lack of good posture, i managed to solder a few unrelated connections together, ripped off the original motherboard solder from some, unhooked one of those small components from its proper location and lost it somewhere.

that was basically the end of it. i daren't turn the system on at this state. might've killed the rest of the components (which costs much more). time to cut my losses and buy a new one.

cleaned up. took a shower. took my sis and JL to merv's shop where we all took the LRT together to the PC fair. ndb and naf came along too.

the KLCC convention centre where it was held was a nice place, despite being forced to go up and down 3 floors just to get to where we want. the 1st hall was where the big league companies were, with big booths and lotsa girls in nice tight clothes. didn't spend much time there, as time was ticking, and tiff was waiting. :D

the next few halls were more down to earth. since it was the last day, the place pretty much turned into a cyber-pasar malam, with every exhibitor shouting out last calls for their supposedly discounted goods.

went to the catcha booth where tiff was. tried our luck at the typing of the dead contest to no success. it was impossible to win in the defeated state of mind i was in. ended up with two copies of the same magazine. :P oh well, the winner supposedly invested a lot (a long subscription and a lot more copies of the same mag!), so i guess he deserved the adidas 1:1.

so much for my big talk. :P

didn't find any motherboards for sale, but i did manage to get one quote for a foxconn socket 478 motherboard. socket 478, the type i need, is slowly being phased out, so it's going to be hard to find a motherboard that would make me happy. oh well, we'll see what happens tomorrow (EL!).

after a quick round around the booths, we went to Chili's for dinner. merv volunteered to wait, while the rest of us made a quick visit to Kino. kittenz got herself a volume of furuba, while i got myself the next Darren Shan trilogy. since i can't use my computer, might as well read for a change.

by the time we were done with dinner, it was maybe 10.30. the LRT will probably be jam-packed, so we decided to walk back to Dang Wangi where our vehicles were. it was a nice cooling night, and the view was fantastic. attempted a stunt with the fountains between KLCC and Public Bank, getting myself refreshingly wet. oh well, we got caught in the rain after that anyway.

so here i am. showered. sighing as the wind blows through the apartment. break time.

since i'll be off tomorrow (last minute approval from the boss :D), i'm hoping to take a break. but there's the last minute coin-exchange (my mom found a bunch of duit raya packets full of gold coins), and possibly my mom's epf withdrawal. might even consider dropping by low yat to get a replacement board.

*sigh* there's just no rest for the technically-inclined, is there? :\

coins = embarassment

decided to convert my bag of coins today, collected throughout the past 1-2 years. add a few golden coins and we have one helluva heavy shoe box.

so this morning, i lugged it down to the carpark from home. drove to work. lugged it from Plaza Pantai to Menara Telekom, and up the elevator to my floor. didn't think it was a big deal then.

then came morning talk. the bosses gave their updates and whatnot, and one particular one decided to get some of us to read out some newspaper clippings about the company. i was one of them. feeling like there's nothing to it, i just simply marched out and started reading.

that's when my hands started shaking. uncontrollably. and very very visibly. i wasn't nervous; i could very well have been the best english speaker present. but it was something else... something to do with coins. i guess carrying that shoe box all over the place really strained my arms a bit, so whenever i bring my hands up horizontally, they start to shake.

but of course, the perception was that i was nervous. oh well. maybe i should start working out again. at least i got rm316 out of the whole experience. :P

updates

ahhhh monday. another week of slaving. promotion seems closer now; it's silhouette floating just beyond my view. and yet, i am unable to reach out to it, just to touch it even seems hard.

sigh sigh sigh.

well, to start of the day, i've been updating some stuff on friendster. adding friends, updating my profile a lil bit. wooo, a lot of things to catch up on. :D me thanks the person who created the SMBB profile.

the last weekend was a busy one. a working saturday from 8 to 1 had me up at 7.30. immediately after, i went to ezree (an ex-smbbian)'s open house in bangsar park for some really good food. the caterer was actually one of the security guard's working at his office (bank islam), but the lemang was moist and soft, the rendang tender and flavorful, the kuah kacang nice and sweet. had a good catch up with Sharina and Noreen, but there were a lot of things planned for the day so i had to take my leave before the other ex-SMBBians arrived.

left at 3 and headed down to town for some retail therapy. it was definitely going to be jammed that day, with shahrizat having her open house at dataran. took the opportunity to test my memory of shortcuts, and went in via VI without problems. witnessed a few near accidents though; lotsa evil malaysian drivers on the road. only problem was when i arrived in the 'square', i took a turn that leads back out to jln bukit bintang hoping to get into sungei wang's parking, but the way was barred (it was full) and that forced me to take a full circle around the area. got stuck a good 45 minutes there. :(

managed to get back in again, and did the smart thing by parking at low yat instead. went straight up to try and replace my noisy northbridge fan (failed, no warranty on fans @#$@#$) at cycom, and got a few more fans for my CPU from robyncom. made acquaintance with Ken, one of robyn's more prominent figures (not sure whether he's the manager or an owner). looks like they'll be selling OCZ ram soon, which i might splurge on for reasons i'll divulge later.

on the way down, got a call from merv to get a keyboard. stopped by a hong leong ATM and got meself some cash at an RM2 loss, which was no biggie considering the situation (weekend queues at the Maybank ATM are horrendous). and somehow, someone knew i was going down, so they broke the escalator. :P hectic, hectic!

grabbed the keyboard, while having a good chat with Gigi. picked up some dvd folders in the process. zoomed to basement level 4 to drop the computer stuff. zoomed back up for a quick run to mandy's shop in sungei wang. didn't get any of my games replaced, since it became obvious that it was my PS2 console that needed fixing. dropped off my rosak multitap for a replacement the following week. bought a few new games too. :D

by the time i was done it was already close to 6pm. no point going home now, so i stopped by merv's place for a breather. watched some advent children parodies and managed to catch a very fleeting nap. the immediate gang then arrived and we took off to mid valley for dinner and our movie outing.

the movie was harry potter 4. the place was GSC mid valley, gold class. the host, andy. hooray for andy! :D it was great fun. the movie itself was a nice refresher, reminding me exactly how those kids looked like. makes me wonder what harry was thinking in book 6?! *clears throat* anyway, it was also fun meeting up with all the old #Bangsar gang, and also making some new friends as well. :)

i could've prepared myself though. it's been so long since my last gold class visit that i forgot how cold it was. my neighbor, jia-li, and i were freezing our butts off, and even our hot drinks didn't survive the chilling onslaught. oh well, gotta keep that in mind next time.

after that, the usual gang adjourned for drinks at mahbub. there was lots of catching up to do. a lot of surprising news too. about stolen cars and whatnot. it's a really dangerous world we're living in these days. better to stay home and sleep, which was pretty much what i did sunday.

oh sunday, how i miss you already. sleep, play, sleep, play was all i did that day. oh, and a bit of overclocking too (here i go again). with a proper cpu fan in place that can go up to 2700rpm, i've now managed to push the PC to 3.75 GHz. i've set the voltage a little high though, but without a volt-mod the voltage goes down as load goes up anyway, so it shouldn't hurt too much. the downside of it is that the RAM can't keep up, so it's running way below par. which is why i'm considering the super-expensive OCZ ram when it's available. much better handling of fast speeds and excellent timings.

ok, back to work. :P

bloody mcds

ordered 2 bubur ayam. arrived late. with most of the gravy spilled to the bottom of the plastic bag.

seems pretty obvious that the mcds delivery team lacks a certain level of commitment to do things right. all the other established delivery services from Dominos and Pizza Huts have somewhat adequate quality control to ensure their customers remain happy.

it takes 30 minutes to deliver a pizza. mcdonalds almost always take longer. c'mon people, it's supposed to be fast food!

and the bubur. why wasn't it in some special packaging to ensure it doesn't spill? i've seen the ways these riders risk their neck to get to their destinations, and there's definitely enough shake ups to overturn the simple polystirene cups. they do all sort of stunts, running red lights, making illegal turns, scraping other vehicles, and yet they're still bloody late!

sigh. i can probably drive down to the section 14 branch and get my food faster. and i'd cost less than the RM 2 delivery charge driving a 2 litre carb car with a leaky gasket. don't talk to me about convenience either. it's inconvenient enough having to clean up the mess, yell at the rider, and call the hotline to complain. and none of the people i spoke to offered to replace the food.

kids and managers

what's with kids and leaving the bathroom lights on? almost every other time i'd find the light on in the morning. makes me wonder if they have some sort of green invisible pet living there. it's not like it's hard to get up and turn it off. and feigning ignorance won't work; my sister's normal sleeping position gives a good view of the lighted bathroom window!

*sigh*

anyways, got back to work on monday with piles of issues to look at and work to be done. and while i was gone, somehow the boss agreed to let management take my assistant away. gosh, as if the workload isn't big enough! even with the added burden of having to do authorisation profiles, they still like to stick to their lame formulae. 1 support personnel per 100 users does not work. get real.

fortunately, the hr manager came to the rescue. yay!

errors down south

susah susah.

my pc has been crashing relentlessly lately. i may have pushed it too far. my graphics RAM now runs properly at a lower clock rate, and prime95 has been giving lotsa errors too. checking back my documentation, i guess i set the timings too tight.

so my graphics card is broken, and my memory is failing me. what else is new? a lot of time i've been getting errors from a USB driver. i don't know if it's related to the memory or not, but if necessary i'll just have to throw a heatsink onto the southbridge as well.

anyways, i've finally finished my week-long 'Training for Trainers' course, which was the main reason why i couldn't blog much. the course title was Basic Instructional Skills, and we covered just that. at first i didn't think i had to take it seriously, but this was a lesson made to perfection, with lotsa activities and a final graded presentation.

i hope i passed. we were supposed to present something related to our work, but a lot of the attendees were from the same dept as i was, so i came up with something else: overclocking. i just covered the basic components and scientific elements related to it. was up to 3am this morning finishing up my material. 42 slides presented in 45 minutes. :)

i'm so sleepy now. but i gotta go to the yacht club for some function before the raja muda regatta. well, i could use the food. skipped lunch to make some last minute touchups.

away from work. not.

today begins a week of training in Bangi. this time, we're to be taught how to prepare and deliver proper presentations.

5-days of topics covering 'basic' skills. on friday, a final presentation to determine whether we're fit to teach (and get the teaching allowance! :D). not as relaxing as i thought it'd be.

even so, the users keep calling. *sigh*

finger safety

last night i almost ripped my right index fingernail off when it got caught in my cpu fan. was investigating a rattling noise (which originated from my northbridge fan) and thought i could stop the fan by sticking a finger in. smart, eh?

well, looks like i won't need to change my cpu casing after all. unplugged all my cables and rearranged them nicely to make more air space. discovered a nice corner behind the hard drive cage to tuck most of them into.

i also rearranged my ide drives and managed to wedge in a 120mm fan into the drive bay area. in order to avoid any more finger injury, i'll need to source an aluminum grill to cover it.

asyik-asyik overclock

back at 3.6 GHz again. no point spending hours testing the system after each 1 MHz FSB increment. instead, tightened the ram timings, minimizing memory latency and increasing bandwidth.

something else i might try is to up the frequency divider of the memory to make it run at the same ratio as the overclocked FSB. i'll have to loosen the timings for that though, so i'll try it later. right now, i'm quite happy with the current results.

i've also been researching the components i'll need to "Droop Mod" my motherboard, thanks to wired for his input. will need to drop by Pasar Road sometime to get them. but at the same time, i'll also need a new casing that allows better airflow.

or... i can do some sawing. :D

okay enough of overclocking for now. last night i had the chance to see the Song Company, an acapella group from Australia at the Australian High Commission. the bunch of us were skeptical at first, unsure whether the show will be good, and this was enforced by their first performance which was... menyakitkan telinga (well, the title of that bit was Bats' Ultrasound anyway). but their 2nd piece got us back into the right mood, and it got better from then on. the show started at 8.30pm, ending sometime at 10.30pm. the first half concentrated more on arrangements based on poems, and the 2nd half gave us more song. all in all, it was great. tiff, sorry for teasing you. :P

today, fish and i went to an ex-secondary schoolmate (Fatimah)'s house in Kajang for her open house. t'was fun. lotsa people we haven't met in a while. fortunately, i tak malu, and asked for their names again. might as well be honest than ignorant. well, we meet halmie, justin, ros noreen, ezree. waited out a bit for li lian, but she was late from work. aww.

6-feet from the edge

actually, more like 5 MHz from my overclocking limit.

seems that my bro played BF2 today with the FSB at 250 MHz, i.e. CPU running at 3.75 GHz. crashed twice.

returned home from work, ran torture tests via Prime95, and errors popped up.

i think the problem here is that the current motherboard i'm using, the ASUS P4P800 SE, doesn't maintain the voltage i set in the BIOS. instead, as CPU load goes higher, the voltage starts to go as low as 1.4 V (when i want it constant at 1.5 V, for example). i'm not confident enough to start soldering stuff on my motherboard, so i guess i'll let it be. for now, i'll just stick to moving the FSB up slowly to hit the current limit (it's at 245 MHz now).

anyway, it was my first day of work today after such a long break. i was so sleepy the entire day. skipped lunch just to take a nap. new issues keep pouring in, remorseless and unrelenting. argh, the stress!

the trip and more

so....

we left home very late last friday, at about 9pm. there was so much of cleaning up to do, that very little attention was paid to packing. my mom cared to remind my younger siblings, and left me as i should. problem is my mind was rather preoccupied with something which i can't quite recall at the moment, which caused me to underpack a few 'essential' items.

anyways, the drive was rather uneventful, except for the part where PLUS decided to reduce traffic to one lane to make more for traffic heading back to KL. it sucks when there's ALWAYS a jam along the Seremban-Senawang stretch. these planners need to think farther ahead into the future.

we arrived in Batu Pahat about 12.30am. by the time we entered the trunk roads, i was already very weary and may have been a tad too careless and impatient at the time. was overtaking a bunch of motorcycles against incoming traffic when something triggered a motor reaction to make me swerve further out of the line. fortunately, it wasn't much, but i'd think the drivers that saw me probably swore a bunch.

needless to say, i went straight to bed that morning.

we woke up at 8.30am to the sound of tv from the living room. since the house was very small, the foyer was converted into living quarters for all the cucu-cicit who might stay over, like ourselves. even then, there was only so much space. altho without luxuries like air-conditioning, the night was cold enough as it is, and it made me, who hasn't much meat to his bones, restless throughout the night. but the air was refreshing at least. btw, one of my grandaunties (Tok Busu) lived here.

after a quick breakfast, we (+Tok Busu and cousin) went off to visit my grandmother's grave. it was still somewhat early in the morning, but the sun was already scorching our backs. we quickly made our prayers for our dearly departed, and set off to my granduncle's grave at a different location to do the same. it was already 11+ by the time we finished, so we hurried off to an uncle's house for some visiting and lunch. this uncle lived in a more newly developed area of Batu Pahat, and the house was a corner linked lot renovated for a bigger living area. it was nice. veggies and such were also planted in a small kebun behind the house, so the greens in our meal were fresh and juicy.

ready we were to continue the journey down south. we had already packed earlier with luggage in car, so we said our goodbyes and headed straight for Johor Bahru. sometime along the road, my mom noticed i was still wearing the same t-shirt and track bottoms i had on the night before. oops. with her maternal authority, she forced me to stop at a mall (one that sported 'Metrojaya' on its walls) for some last minute shopping. it was unorthodox to buy raya clothes after raya, but it had to be done. Khairil also got himself a pair of jeans, while I got myself a very nice clubbing shirt and a usual pair of black slacks.

so then we crossed the jammy causeway and into Singapore. got a little lost by getting onto Jln Eunos in the wrong direction but it wasn't as bad as the trip before last. at least now, i think i have the geography sorted out a bit. emphasis on the 'bit' mind you. we reached our destination (another grandauntie's place, Mak Tok) in time to clean ourselves up and have some dinner. it was great to see our SG relatives, especially our lovely cousins, again. :)

the plan was that there wasn't any plan. it started off with nothing, and then a supposed visit to a granduncle (Tok Cik)'s place, to nothing again. so we, the youngsters, took matters into our own hands. but with consent of course. and i only got to wear my cool shirt for 10 minutes before having to take it off again (and that was on monday morning, when we finally got around to the visit) because it was 'too nice'. :P and i ruined it a bit too: the iron i used to straighten out the wrinkles had sharp steam holes which caught on the thread. it sucks cause it's brand new, but i doubt/hope many people won't notice. well, it's just a shirt anyhow. a very expensive one. bleh. anyway, ayin burnt one of her baju using the same iron, so i guess my loss isn't so bad. poor kitty.

so that day we went out and toured a bit of Singapore, mainly its manga/anime/book places. with me at the helm and hemlocke as my trusted navigator, we first went to Anime House at Sunshine Plaza to take a look at the manga and teeny anime collectibles like handphone danglies and pins and such. i just remembered that we were supposed to go back there when that particular section of the shop opened, but i guess we forgot.

anyway, we moved on to Bugis Junction for lunch at Siam Kitchen. we were light eaters (and contrary to popular belief, so was i :P) so we only ordered 3 dishes. the food was okay, but the pandan chicken could be better i think, and the green curry much more spicy. :D

we then made off to Orchard Rd where we spent all of our time in Takashimaya SC, where Kinokuniya is located. that's where i got my copy of the last bartimaeus book, and a few volumes of Celestial Zone, a manga by local SG artist Wee Tian Beng. somehow, over all these years, we lost track of this cool series and are still missing a big chunk of volumes in between. luckily, with our cuzzie's help, we can place orders for them via Kino. hopefully they still have stock *crosses fingers*.

after that, we took our horde to Delifrance where we had our tea. the delifrance in SG is very different than the ones we have here in Malaysia, having being converted into something bistro-like (hence the name Delifrance Bistro). all food items in the menu had french names, which gives the impression of something classy (yet somehow, wasabi mayo doesn't quite fit into that picture).

kittenz on the other hand went off to meet a friend somewhere else in the building. she sure took her time. :P the rest of us had mostly finished our reading material and were flipping books repeatedly for closure. ichaya snoozed. well, she got back eventually, and it was about time we rushed back for our evening prayers and dinner. spent the rest of the precious evening in idle chat about a variety of stuff. they had to return home that very night to prepare for work the next day. sigh. work sucks on a global scale.

the following day was uneventful. the visit to Tok Cik's place. returning to JB. visited my grandfather's grave. visited my great grandfather's grave. jam at Senawang (again) due to a lame accident. reached home at 5pm, and lepak-ed watching Mai-HiME up to 5am this morning. finished my book just two hours ago. after watching the gut-wrenching Mai-HiME episodes leading to the climax/ending, the book ending was somewhat disappointing. well, i guess i can't be crying/laughing by myself too much.

oh well. my turn to go to work tomorrow. but not before an overclocking adventure! i've finally broken into the world of manual overclocking, allowing me to tweak all aspects of it in every detail thanks to this newbie guide. i'm still running at 3.6GHz, but at least my memory clock is almost what it should be (the automatic tuner had it running at PC2600, while manual adjustments allowed me to bring it up to PC3100, just slightly lower than the intended PC3200. pretty soon i'll start pushing the envelope, one megahertz at a time. then to optimize the memory timings, 1 clock at a time. exciting stuff!

pop goes the heatsink

my computer has been very steady at 3.6 GHz. the more i think about it, the more i felt that i should've refrained myself from my past impulsive buys. the northbridge coolers in particular.

the first one i bought, the a normal coolermaster heatsink, was a nice silver aluminum thing. RM 30. came home, realised that the motherboard already has a stock heatsink that's even BIGGER than the one i bought.

*doh*

the 2nd one i bought, a coolermaster blue ice thingie, was a funky looking thing. looked like an arcology from SimCity. RM 60. came home, realised that the thing could barely fit onto the motherboard (see previous post).

*doh*

that's just the beginning though. was playing doom 3 a while ago when i hear a distinct pop sound from the computer. immediately i thought something blew, but the game did not halt or jerk or show whatever sign of a burnt component. well, i had to investigate it anyway, so i saved the game, and exited to windows. only then did the expected blue-screen appear.

restarted the pc. nothing. checked the memory sticks. nothing. after looking here and there and sniffing about for any metallic smell, i finally found the cause: one of the hooks holding the heatsink down had snapped, lifting the heatsink from the surface of the chip. so basically, the chip overheated, and forced the system to shut down. thank Intel for all the internal failsafe mechanisms!

*sigh* i knew i shouldn't have tightened those mounting clips too much. the thing is already wedged beneath the CPU heatsink, so it was only a matter of holding it in place. the pc is running fine now, but i've yet to secure the heatsink properly. hope i don't break any more clips!

holiday hooray!

to all my indian friends and colleagues, happy deepavali!

and tomorrow, another greeting for all my muslim acquantances! :D

not to forget the others, whom i hope are having a good holiday!

woke up super early today to go food shopping in Kelana Jaya. the rendang and the lemang there are excellent. normally, the kelana jaya pasar tani opens every saturday morning, but they'd also be there the day before raya for those raya goods that don't last long (like meats, fermented rice, etc).

just finished cleaning one of the bathrooms. need a rest before we go out again. mom wants to drop by an aunt's place, as well as make a short stop at her office to check her email. then we'll be heading back to the PKNS complex in shah alam to get some serunding.

then after that, more cleaning. floor remains to be swept and mopped. don't think i'll bother with my room.

*phew* who said holidays were supposed to be relaxing?

tonight, will most likely spend time with relative in PJ, particularly in the Kg. Tunku area, where a group of neighbors will visit most Malay houses and recite do'a. very light refreshments are served at each house, but one can't stay too long or be left behind by the group. the kids, get to collect duit raya along the way. if only i started doing this years earlier! maybe i can pass off as a college student. :D

yesterday:

woke up at 11. did some simple cleaning in the living room. had plans to go to town, but before that: raya shopping! the bro needs his raya suit and shoes. since i'm no longer growing, i don't really need anything. besides, i already have my super-cool clark's sandals from tiff's shop. :D

before we took off, i took some time to look at my pc again. wanted to redo the application of thermal paste on the cpu because i probably put too much the last time. i was happily prying the heatsink off when i realised that the chip was stuck to it. and to my horror: bent pins! about 8 of them. it was a panicky time. after cleaning off the grease, i had to meticulously straighten each pin, first with my fingers and when things got a little too tight, with a pushpin. it became more horrifying when i couldn't set the chip back into the socket. it took a little work before i managed to do it.

needless to say i won't be taking that off again. at least not without heating the heatsink first. fortunately nothing broke. :P

so my mom, my bro, and i headed down to subang parade to look for some clothes for the kid. my sister could have used some as well, but her measurements aren't normal so we couldn't actually buy anything. we did however find some designs that would've looked gorgeous on her.

spent a few hours there. left with nothing in hand. so we stop by 1U instead. mom got some kuih, but that was about it. we parked at the old wing, and i lacked the energy to follow her to the new wing, so i seated myself on one of the benches outside and dozed off for a bit. the weather at the time was rather hot, but the strong wind was very cooling. altho the arm i rested on ached a bit when i got up.

cheap quality sandals are hard to find these days. so where do you go? tiff's shop! :D got my bro some clearance sandals, which looked, altho slightly old-fashioned, rather comfy. he wears size 9 by the way. tsk. got some cloth from nearby binwani's too.

so that's done! but not without a short stop at metrojaya. nothing much there. poor service and lack of interesting things.

zoom zoom! dropped the family off at home and rushed off to get wan yee. low yat was the destination! wan yee picked up a new 200GB SATA-II drive! i planned to return my fan-which-did-not-fit and northbridge-heatsink-which-was-smaller-than-stock to Robyncom, but they were doing stock check. i'd only be able to go back next wednesday, so i thought might as well get a replacement cpu fan and an alternative northbridge cooler. so at cycom, as i was contemplating which fan to buy, Liu, one of the familiar salespeople came up to us and pointed out this huge coolermaster northbridge heatsink. i was mesmerized.

since it was running late, we broke fast at shokudo, a restaurant selling fusion jap/thai food. well, i did at least. i knew i had stuff to do at home, so we parted ways after that. i got home, took out that big heatsink and was all set to plunk it onto my motherboard when i discovered that it didn't fit. normally it would've, but the huge heatsink used for my CPU was in the way. tried to stick it in from the left, from the right, even tried dismantling the plastic covering the heatsink, but to no avail. in the end, i just forced the thing in and crossed my fingers. it worked at the time, got myself two gold medals in BF2 :P had a problem with it later on, but you can read that in my next post.

headache

i just had a go at Gallery 2.0, and it looks fantastic.

however, i don't think i'll be migrating the photo album just yet, as the code looks complicated and i won't be able to create any new tool to read the G2 information. besides, G1 works alright so far.

took my mom to the yacht club today. there was a photography session for the youth teams sailing for the raja muda. due to most of them being tardy / missing, i had to pose as a sailor. :P kinda disheartening when they ask you to look away, preferring to take shots of your back/ass. it's as if i'm not sailor material.

well, that is true. haven't sailed for so long that i've forgotten the ropes. literally.

a movable type photoblog using gallery

wheeeeee i just love the holidays!

took the entire day sorting out my computer stuff into proper boxes and drawers. there's a lot more to clean up before Hari Raya.

haven't even had a chance to play any games today. :( can't blame the spring cleaning, cuz it all started with me messing around with some MT plugins at work (it was the last day of work before the hols and no one was doing anything seriously). stumbled upon the Gallery Link plugin, which is rather basic as it is, but provides ground for improvement.

so here i am, improving it. :P

to avoid my main page from getting messed up while i experiment with this, i only modified the individual entry template to show the pictures. i'll probably add some 'sample' functionality for the main page later.

In addition to the existing tags, i added the MTGalleryAlbum container tag, which allows me to iterate all photos in a particular album (parameters: album, firstn) and the MTGalleryAlbumPhotoLink variable tag, which does the same thing as MTGalleryLink except for every photo found in the album.

The new container tag basically looks for all the thumbnails in the directory of the specified album. This would slow things down a lot if there are lots of pics in there.

In order to make different albums display with different entries, I had to create a new 'album' entry field via the CustomFields plugin, and to pass that value as a parameter to GalleryLink I had to use the MTTagInvoke plugin.

So i should get a nice list of thumbnails here that are linked to the actual photos on the gallery:

brown-necks?!

just as i leave my house for work today i run into two beatup vans trying to outdo each other in residential territory.

the drivers: somewhat uneducated skinny malays wearing caps. these types always wear caps while driving, don't they?

kinda amazing how they manage to keep those derelict vehicles from falling apart driving so fast.

oh well. on another note, i seem to have botched my leave application for this coming holiday season. i seriously thought that i'd be on leave starting the 31st, but according to the system i'll only be away 2nd onwards.

that means i have to come to work on monday! argh!

but just to double check, i'd better dig up my submitted leave form and see if it's really true. :\

and here's some updates on my pc status. as mentioned before, i've brought down the CPU frequency back to the original so that i can test each overclocked level / component thoroughly. so at the moment, i'm seeing how the overclocked GPU fares. it's currently running at 450MHz/350MHz, which is quite alright. 3dmark03 scores show a +1000 point improvement. and with my SATA drive all nicely set up, BF2 load times have never been faster. so far, i'm always the first person to enter a map after its loaded, so the attack chopper is usually mine, all mine! :D :D :D

more techy stuff

finished transferring all my "goods" from my old hard drive to the new one. it's now unplugged and idling in my chassis at the moment, while i figure out what exactly i should do with it.

with my PSU fan speed on minimum, my computer is soooooo quiet now. means i can make it work while i sleep. :D

think i should get a chassis fan just to help the airflow a bit. as it is now, with the casing closed up, the cpu and mobo idles at about 38 degrees. could be better i think.

anyway, took the car straight to DU today to fix its dire overheating problem. before this i had to refill the radiator every two weeks, but since i took a bad bump hit in bangsar a few days ago, i've had to do that every day pretty much.

seems that the steel pipe that runs through the engine is badly rusted, and one end of it, where the hole is plugged by a rubber stopper (which when removed allows you to flush the cooling system), is so thinned out that water is seeping through. the mechanic had to saw that edge off to plug the leak.

hopefully that would be the end of my overheating woes. but i'll still carry that big bottle of water in my trunk, just in case.

since i was already there, i serviced the car as well. and since i was in pj, i took the liberty of spending the next two hours looking for parking in pj state to pick up my new mykad. daym, i've forgotten the feeling of a newly serviced car. and daym, i feel much better having picked up my mykad after delaying for 3 months (another few days and i'd have to pay a hundred ringgit fine). ooh, and i had my breaks cleaned out as well. maybe the handbrake turn will work this time.

ready to run

Thermalright SI-120 heatsink installed!

fluorescent 120mm fan installed!

ATI Silencer 1 (Rev 2) installed!

benq dvd-rw drive installed!

now let's try and pump this machine up! :D

add: managed to install everything without much difficulty. may have laid on a bit too much arctic silver on my cpu than recommended. altho the fan is big, it's really more of a silent fan than a performance fan, only running at 1300 rpm.

at first i tried to manually up the FSB by about 10MHz. it went well till a few minutes later, crashing with a nice big blue screen while i was running the torture test on prime95. guess i should've foresaw my experimentative-nature and bought performance RAM. gave up trying to figure out the quirks and just used the motherboard's 'easy-overclock' to push everything by 10%.

seems to be fine so far. at the same time, i'm trying to push the speed of my video card (9800 Pro) to match 9800 XT speeds. there has been talk of Pro cards carrying the R360 GPU used on the XTs, and while changing my GPU fan i wiped off the thermal grease and took a peek and yahoo there it was: R360 emblazoned across the shiny surface of the chip.

so here i am, running my CPU at 3.3GHz. and GPU at 412MHz (with video memory at 350MHz).

on hindsight, i should've bought some cleaner to get rid of the original thermal grease from the CPU and GPU. and examining my video card closer, it's would be able to fit the ATI Silencer 3, a vga cooler made for the 9800 XT. although priced the same, 3 definitely beats 1.

btw, watched Sky High last night. gewd :) lotta hero jokes. :D

hmm.. it seems that my mood field is missing :(

the weekend in retrospect.

sunday: finished half-life 2. nothing interesting there. pretty much spent the entire weekend on it. besides mopping the floor.

monday: ordered a 200gb sata1 drive and an extra gig of ram from merv who visited low yat that day. went to his place after work to pick up the goods only to end up playing mahjong and breaking fast at nirwana's (an excellent banana leaf restaurant in bangsar). i should've had more drinks after that, but i didn't and suffered the next day. didn't even manage a good night's sleep because some GIRL needed to download something so i had to leave my noisy pc on overnight. *grr* oh, and tiffany got me NERDS! yay!

tuesday: sore eyes, sore throat. took the afternoon off. found 1/2 a gig of ram to be busted, so that makes two things i need to bring back to cycom. tried the F.E.A.R. singleplayer demo: freaky! brought this website down to transfer data to the new hard drive. now that my original 200 gig is formatted as native freebsd ufs2, i don't have to worry about corrupted downloads anymore.

today: data is being transferred back to the server at home as we speak. :D i hope it'll be done by the time i get home so that i can get rid of my current system drive which is the cause of the noise. the sata should give me some performance boost as well. ^_^

been cracking my head solving a problem at work since thursday, so i've been staying back rather late. so much so that i miss breakfast at home. took the opportunity to eat at someplace nice, so i called henry out for chili's on thursday (wings over buffalo + oldtimer), and went to delicious by ms read on friday (some dry mushroomy pasta and a latte). ahhhhh :)

can't help it

having a chat with my ex-mandarin teacher right now. altho there's so much i wanna ask her pertaining to what happened, but somehow i can't press myself to press her.

i'm too nice. :( well, she was a nice teacher to begin with...

at least she offered to help out online. won't help my pronunciation though. and without a proper syllabus, i wonder how far it will go.

*sigh*

david's been admitted again, and it looks rather serious this time. i wanna go visit but i dowanna go alone! :( and it's tough in the evening due to breakfast, but i should be able to manage that somehow. should've gone with merv yesterday. :\ stupid tummy ache.

QuickLink test

trying out a new plugin. this particular one lets me manage a set of words which will automatically generate a link when i post. for example, if i use BF2 a lot, and i want people to know more, i'd add that as a quicklink and link every mention of BF2 to http://battlefield2.ea.com. so hopefully, the bf2's i've mentioned so far have all been quicklinked. :)

visit the QuickLink project page.

Here's my extended entry section. This BF2 here should also be quicklinked (see comments)

lack of integrity

i just found out that the language center that i've been going to for mandarin classes has closed down. and apparently the owner(s) fled back to China.

damned mofos!

i'm starting to have real doubts in the integrity of the people in general. especially with regards to Chinamen, with this incident plus all the horror stories you hear of expat businesses collapsing in China. i'm not being country-ist or racist mind you, but how do you avoid such a perception with that kind of experience and input?

it may be true that the center has been operating for many years, having lots of happy students and experienced personnel. but all that good image built up is immediately shattered when the operators betrayed everyone's trust. it's the same with any other company, or person, or whatever. no one will care about how good you were before, if at the end of the day you'd only bring frustration and anger to the people who trusted you and who depended on you.

guess my sister and i will go make a police report now. dunno bout the rest of the gang. :(

thinking back, i may have made a lot of hasty decisions, like the diving lessons and the mandarin lessons.i should've thought things through more thoroughly. maybe even do some research to find the best options. instead, i just went with the general opinion of the crowd and end up in less-than-ideal situations. *sigh*

a lot of bad things happening today. a divine sign for me to repent, perhaps?

first day

to all Muslims around the world, happy Ramadhan fasting. :)

the start of my first day of fasting has been rather interesting. the night before i was feeling the usual 'sleep attack' right about 10pm. usually if i force myself to keep awake this attack will pass and i'd be up till 12-1am. but this time i decided to concede, since i had to wake up at 5am for breakfast.

had two slices of bread with peanut butter. :P

decided to go back to sleep after subuh (dawn) prayers, which was a mistake since there wasn't much time left after to complete a proper sleep cycle. i was rather groggy until i almost got into an accident as i was about to get onto the federal highway. i was taking my usual route on Jalan Universiti and as I was exiting onto the highway i would usually estimate where i'll be able to slip into traffic coming in from Jalan Gasing. this time i noticed ample space after a green taxi. so i assumed the green taxi would be moving on its way, checking the speed of the next oncoming vehicle, so i was moving and not looking towards the front. as i was about to cut into the proper lane, i shockingly noticed that the taxi was barely moving, and was closing into MY current lane. at the time i was still in my lane, but if i had continued on my course i'd have whacked into the left-rear corner of the taxi. luckily i was able to break and swerve away in time. that probably wore out my tires a bit more, but at least my body is intact.

so that was the morning... seems that there's more to come.

reading queue additions

due to someone from upstairs bringing in some rowdy kids last night, i had a weird dream. a dream of someone inhabiting the currently empty unit above us and causing us more chaos than the previous tenants! seemed so real i had to take a while to realise that it was just a figment of my nocturnal subconscious activity.

this morning, a friend-colleague had asked that i clock in for her since she was late (it's always a 'she', isn't it?). normally i wouldn't mind, but due to recent developments i hesitated this time. gotta start safeguarding my position, putting up a proper front of non-tardiness. also gotta stay away from other things which may incur disciplinary action. she was slightly ticked off, but nothing i can't handle. :D

back to the main topic, more things to read!: Basara, 3x3 Eyes, Eden, Eyeshield 21, FMA, Glass Mask (last resort :P), GTO in English!, Hajime no Ippo, Hana Yori Dango, Hellsing, Inu Yasha, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

Hypnotuned: Do As Infinity Live in Japan 2004

hmm.. think i should put hypnotuned as a custom field as well. :)

site updates

as you can see, i've added my little tehsig.com's BF2 signature showing my latest BF2 stats. at the moment i'm still using the stock images from the site; will probably use some Taiko no Tatsujin imagery from bangsar.net later. :)

another thing done for the backend was to install the CustomFields">CustomFields plugin for MT 3.2. This thingie will allow me to define special fields for each of my entries, such as moods. I was using the KeyValues plugin before, but that made use of my Extended Entry section, which really isn't the right place for these kinda things. in fact, this entry serves as a test to see if the new plugin works, so if it does, you'll be seeing my happy drums on the top right corner. :)

i still have the KeyValues plugin in effect to keep my old moods intact. might have to remove them in the future if performance becomes unbearable.

not that it matters.. i only have an average of 16 visitors per day. :O

the addiction continues

finished off HanaKimi. read up 155 chapters of Shaman King. now kinda at a loss as to what to read next. even if Smallville season 5 is out on the net, i still need to fill in the gaps between each episode.

hmm... some probable contenders, i'd better list them here so i won't forget: MAR, Nana, Perfect Girl Evolution, Prince of Tennis (as much as i'd hate to admit, this is an interesting series. but don't get me wrong! i read manga for story only, NOT to admire whatever bishounens there are. besides, there are bishoujo's to consider.), Saikano, Samurai Deeper Kyo, Shadow Lady (dunno what this is about, but the title itself is intriguing), Slam Dunk.

been taking lots of naps due to the strain on my eyes. i'm glad it's the weekend.

addicted to fantasy

been catching up on my manga for the past week. that means re-reading 190 chapters of Bleach, 77 chapters of Death Note, and now 23 volumes of Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (HanaKimi).

needless to say, i've been rather sleepy these days. besides that, the only other thing i've been doing is playing BF2, which at times can be rather frustrating seeing how everyone seems to dislike chopper pilots. but overall, it's been steady.

after HanaKimi, i guess the next series would be Shaman King (another 152 chapters there).

so what else do we have to talk about? hmmmm....

astro got disconnected cuz i forgot to pay the bill for 2 months. it was on autopay before but since my card got cancelled i have had to resort to maybank2u instead.

and my immediate supervisor has made departmental news by getting promoted twice in two years. and rumor has it that the next person would be... me. finally, some progress!

warehouse sale mayhem

10am to 6pm.

scholl sale at jalan kemajuan.
sony malaysia sale at ... jalan tanjung utama or something like that.

chose the sony warehouse sale. the first ever by the company.

the night before: got hold of a price list. my sister and i picked out what we wanted: an mp3 head unit and speakers for each our cars, a 10-disc cd-changer for myself and a T1 camera for my sis.

this morning: left home at 9.30am. mad jam around the bandar utama bridge at the nkve pj exit. arrived at 9.50am, and thanks to the kelisa parking was no problem. seemed that they opened the gates earlier, so it was already sardine-packed with people.

my sis and bro went off to look at cams. i went off to the car audio section. everything was gone. only the super-expensive head units remained. fortunately, my sis managed to grab hold of a demo T1. it was in good shape and was selling for RM499. despite not having some key accessories it was still a steal.

by the time that was settled it was already 10am. but due to the humongous amount of credit-card payers, we only managed to finish up by 2pm. yes, 4 hours of queueing! the situation was so chaotic; there was a mass of meat all squished up to gain the attention of 3-4 cashiers. and only one credit-card machine! people were gathered all around, opening up boxes of goods to examine them, and maybe even pocket them! they even ushered some of us out to the service center to make payment, and anyone could've just walked away at that point.

fortunately things seemed to calm down after a few hours, but we've already suffered the full brunt of it. hopefully they won't be discouraged to have another sale like this, but they'd better learn from their mistakes!

guess i'll still have to use my phone for in-car entertainment. :\

life has been rather mundane lately. work, bf2, sleep, work, bf2, sleep.

think i should lay off bf2 a bit. let the rest of the gang catch up. :P do something more meaningful maybe, like finding a house or a wife. hmm.. forget the latter.

been having a lot of yum char sessions lately though. tiff aka driver bum has been rather free and helpful. :)

just finished watching final fantasy vii: advent children, the sequel to final fantasy vii! it was great, having the movie done in full FFX-like animation. watching all the old FF7 characters do their thang during the battles is as exciting as ever. and man, Tifa is such a babe!

not having played the original game meself, i took the time to read the entire game script earlier. got the gist of the story, but it could never beat playing and watching it happen. *sigh*

oh well, time to change wallpaper. :)

irc evolution

while irc technology has progressed to offer conducive chatting environments, there is still a major problem: the human mind. a guy starts a channel. declares himself boss. threatens visitors who don't follow his every whim.

that's when it starts. autonomous rule causes hateful reactions, reactions safely curbed by the tech aforementioned. but the emotions and feelings still remain.

i'll miss #japan-class on efnet. the malaysian guy in charge complained i was idling too much and didn't contribute to the 'liveliness' of the channel. so i left. there was no real conversation anyways. just questions and answers. whatever chatter that happened was mostly high-level anyway, too much for learners to pick up without constant dictionary browsing. if that's what he wanted me to do, then no thanks. i'm a passive learner, picking up from questions others ask. to pursue my nihon-go studies actively would kill my work and play time, which i currently cherish the most. well... the latter at least.

to force me to change my ways is unacceptable. so goodbye Hideki. goodbye pikey. i'll just resume my mandarin lessons for now. gotta poke zoe to get a replacement teacher... or a refund. oh han dan.. where art thou?

wow... this technology would really be a great leap forward for humanity. a fusion plant could easily power a few third world countries altogether. mobile tokamak reactors would then be produced, allowing us to build massive spaceships and travel around the galaxy!

watched charlie & the choc factory last night with the gang. it was fabulous! i loved the oompa-loompas and the songs; grabbing the soundtrack as we speak. and soon after that, ringtone modifications!

i've been at the acm for the past two days, manning my company's booth. i was supposed to be the subject matter expert on the hr system we use, but we weren't really selling anything so we rarely had visitors. spent the time rounding the area picking up a few freebies along the way. the usual paper bags and pens though, as i didn't have the courage to participate in the more crowd-pulling events. the DiGi booth had a challenge to build a Jenga tower 34" tall to win a 34" plasma tv. :O i only found that out 5 minutes before my stint there ended.

i've installed an openid implementation for this blog. now, users of all sites identified by openid, like livejournal, can verify their identity when posting comments. likewise, i can post to livejournal sites using this site's id. :) read about livejournal's openid support here.

i seem to have lost major points playing BF2 for the past two days. i'm guessing it has something to do with the 3AM reboot on EA Japan servers. sigh. i've posted a question on EA support asking why it happens, but i doubt they'll be able to explain much.

let's samba!

while the entire setup was successfully implemented pretty much, there's still some funny things going on.

i've just finished watching sin city on the pc. downloaded it via bittorrent on mario (my server)'s gnome desktop. superb quality.. makes me wanna get a bigger monitor (can you say, plasma? :D).

at least now i can rest assured that all the stuff i've downloaded via the server is ok. now the problem lies with downloading via phoenix, my windows desktop. a few posts ago i talked about samba and all that. samba lets my freebsd server act a little bit windowsy. so here i have some 200gigabytes of fat32 space mounted on mario, and then shared to the network via samba.

now here's the funny thing: almost everything i download via phoenix directly onto mario's shares become corrupted. movies and zip files alike come up bad... kinda like playing a bad record.

hopefully it's something fixed in the latest release of samba, which i've yet to acquire. or if i could find a way to convert the fat32 partitions to freebsd native ufs2; that would even be better.

anyway, i was walking down from my office to my carpark in the next building (yeah, they shifted the lot of us to plaza pantai's season parking), when i wondered if it was ok to rollerblade in menara TM's lobby. i was thinking maybe it wasn't listed in their tenancy rules (well, who'd thought of doing something like that, was what i'd think they'd think). but either way they'll probably stop me for sporting 2 quads of wheels. so then i thought: someone should invent leather corporate heelys! it's time for the yuppie heelie invasion! :P

€”õ OK desu

i was planning to put a full shift-jis title for this post (junbi ok desu! @ preparations complete!) but i just remembered that i don't have any proper Japanese IME (input-something-something) installed. on my previous install, i had MS Office XP Pro installed, so I could just use the IME that came with that. but now that i'm using OpenOffice, that's no longer an option.

anyway, back to the original intention. had a fine time trying to mount my 200gb drive in freebsd. my promise ultra100 card didn't support big drives, so i had to flash it. ntfs didn't work well with samba (a program to let non-windows machines connect to windows networks), so i had to do a partitionmagic conversion to fat32. thought i'd combine my two partitions into one big mutha. freebsd didn't like that either. had to split it up again before things went well. all these problems were taking up bf2 time, which is bad. :O

but it's all good in the end. server's now holding 3 ata hard drives cramped together with an extra fan to cool them down. might just have to add a new aluminum casing to my shopping list next month.

at the same time, i think my .... hmm.. using gaming machine vs. server machine is kinda tiring.. let me just tell you their names:-

- phoenix: the gaming machine. 3.0ghz with 1gb ram with radeon 9800 pro with 1 34gb hdd with 5.1 speakers in a full tower casing that doesn't fit under my built-in desk.

- mario: the server machine. 1.8ghz with 256mb ram with geforce 2 mx with 200gb + 9gb + 3gb hdds with no speakers in an old cyrix 300 casing. :O.

so phoenix's hdd seems to be at its limit, being an rma replacement of my previous ibm deskstar drive. might just get meself a serial ata drive too. :D

eek another month of splurging!

the art of sound

dvd-rw and tv tuner card. that's what i'll need to maximize my pc's potential.

maybe even get a small drive for the sole purpose of hosting a page file. no matter how much memory you have, a poorly managed page file will slow everything down.

with the dvd-rw, i'll also need to figure out how to unlock its region code.

after that, hoard a few months worth of food, and i'll be self-sustained. :D

it's fun having a new set of speakers. in bf2, you start noticing all the sounds you missed previously... the distinct hum of the M1A2, or the starting choke of a chopper.

it's good to have ears.

lookie what we have here

hullo. i'm back! thought you got rid of me, eh? well, it won't be so simple. :P

so, what has been happening the past month. lessee.. can't really recall much in detail, but basically:-

- my newly-upgraded gaming machine's power supply unit blew.
- my newly-upgraded server machine was missing a power supply unit.
- i could only afford 1 PSU at the time.
- spent a lot of time playing BF2.
- still keeping to the 8-to-5 rule.
- went to see DB8, a group from the Phillippines, perform at HRC.
- celebrated zoe's b'day at Klimt's.
- bought a new PSU for the server only yesterday.
- bought a new set of 5.1 speakers as well.

now, after everything is set up, do i realise that my dvd-rom can no longer play dvd movies. :( guess i might have to consider getting a new one the next time i go to low yat next month. need to get myself a tv tuner card too to let me use my PS2 in the comfort of my room.

haven't quite finished tho. wanted to move a 200GB hard drive from my workstation to the server, but i'm too lazy to mess around with it right now. i'm also worried that i won't be able to access all the stuff there when i need them. :/ maybe i should burn them all first...

so to sum it up, i need a
- tv tuner card
- dvd-rw combo drive

finally, less debt!

true helpers

those who are truly honest in helping others usually die poor. Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Razak, passed away without much to their name. may God bless their soul.

but nowadays, you find politicians with million dollar bungalows, with lots of nice fancy cars and whatnot. makes you wonder now, doesn't it?

anyway, some have suggested that i go into politics early. get some networking going, and stuff like that. problem is, i'm not a highly manipulative guy, so i'd probably end up on the bad/poor side of things.

but i wanna be rich.

so i have to find a career that helps people as politicians are supposed to, while getting the big dough in, without being naughty. :)

base camping in battlefield 2

the internet is truly a wondrous place, a place where you can find all sorts of things and all sorts of people.

including childish ones.

here i was, playing operation clean sweep as USMC. things haven't looked good for the team all night, so it wouldn't hurt to try new things. grabbed a free APC, and drove straight to the enemy's uncapturable helipad.

i got there, parked right behind the UAV trailer beside the pad. a few enemy soldiers spawned there.. no biggie, took about 5 to 6 out.

then, one of them initiated to kick me. accused me of base camping. hello? we're at war here. there are no rules.

is it my fault that your soldiers can't hit me with their SRAWs?
is it my fault that you missed me with your artillery fire?

sigh, some people would just make up any excuse to win. and to top it off, that person was a corporal. he has 10000+ more points than i do. i wonder how he got 'em? probably farmed a lot while playing with his prissy no-base-camping pals.

now let's look at it from a real world perspective? what's the US doing now? they're base camping Iraq. not very fair, but it's a war. it's not supposed to be.

of course, a lot of people objected to US military action in the middle east, but those voices are irrelevent in their eyes. it's their war, and they want to win it, like it or not.

so that's what we should do too... play to win. isn't that the whole point of having games? if you can't handle the pressure, go play with your bots.

hmm, i just realised i'm also making an excuse for myself. but doesn't my excuse make more sense? :)

fortunately, one of their teammates agreed with me. base-camping is nonexistant in such a massive game. all they had to do was get rid of me. and they did, after some time. after that, i just kept quiet. no point wasting the keystrokes... it'll just make my karpal tunnel worse..

unfortunately, i was somewhat ticked off to play properly. and i couldn't get around well enough as an engineer. then 1 to 2 of my own teammates started voting me out... probably tripped over my mines. sigh, keep away from those red skull and bones dammit!

i'll be back after my visit to the clinic! just you wait!

neverwinter nights 1.66

wanna have a private nwn party but can't afford to buy more copies of nwn, sou, or hotu? already running your own linux server? accidentally upgraded to 1.66 and have no way of turning back?

edited

i originally wanted to put in the exact solution to this scenario, but i don't want to be too much of a bad guy. :) instead, i'll just let some observations loose.

if you do a google search on 'nwmaster', you'll find many sites talking about how to stop nwn from contacting the bioware master server.

however, every circumvention will lead to breakthrough in prevention, hence version 1.66. now, you can't avoid contact with the master server, because the game server you're connecting to will be your middle man. ie. the game server will send them your cd key.

can't block the server you want to play on, can you? if you want to play on most public servers or persistent worlds, too bad, go buy the game. me? i bought bf2. ha.

but if you just want to have a private party with some buddies, you can still bypass the check if you're running a linux server with a stateful firewall like ipfw. all you need to do is just accept and maintain incoming connections to your server, and deny fresh outgoing connections via the game port.

if you have no clue what i'm talking about, then you're probably not interested in this particular post. or if you are, then go buy the game. :P it's old, but it's expanding with all the custom modules and whatnot. you can wait for neverwinter nights 2 to come out and buy that. nwn 1 would be cheaper too. :D

hmm

i just realised that i haven't blogrolled in a while. it's no wonder my tagboard/comments section are stagnant.

i may soon be changing the theme of this site. make it more battlefield like. but that is if i pull myself away from the game itself.

nwn server is back online. for a while.

waiting for the stats package at bf2s.com to be reintroduced again. then you'll be able to see my stats right here! :D

look for myuu on bf2tracker.com!

and it looks like i'll be getting that new processor next month. it's hard flying choppers through kubra dam with a certain amount of jerkiness. probably get myself a 3.0e. the 1.8 will go into my bsd box, to carry the extra load introduced by my new gnome2 desktop. i've already managed to offload my torrents to it, but the emule part files poses some problem as i lack the disk space to keep them all. tsk.

anyways, in addition to the processor, was thinking of getting an additional 512mb of ram or a logitech mx1000 mouse. what do you think?

and i just realised i've been making a lot of technical references lately. so tadah! inline links!

of war and gnomes

so much for the bf2 server idea. i might just keep one up for practice sessions, but the player limit'll be greatly reduced, and it won't be published on the server list.

instead, i'm now looking into windows managers for freebsd. i've just finished installing gnome, which is supposed to be a pretty nice windows environment for unix machines. think of it as windows xp for free.

this pretty much mean that i'll have more workstation tools for my server, which is already up 24 hours a day. so torrents, p2p applications, etc. will all move to it, allowing me to turn off my microsoft pc and saving a lil bit of electricity, which has been killing me by the way.

worst yet somewhat gratifying saturday ever

2/7/2005. 1st saturday of the month. a non-working saturday. but where was i 7 hours that day? at the office... *sigh*

it was supposed to be a disaster recovery test. things were going smoothly till my assistant accidentally ran a loan program which defaulted about 900 company loans. woo hoo we had some exciting moments indeed. not.

1st depressing moment.

it was already late afternoon and fish had already concocted some dinner plans so i didn't bother going home right after. went straight to kg. baru in me waja for some super nasi lemak. the sambal was just exquisite, and well complimented by a bergedel and some sotong.

1st gratifying moment.

after dinner, we stopped by at merv's shop, to pass him a few loose screws. computer ones. anyway, my mind's been preoccupied all day, having fish buy me a copy of battlefield 2 that morning. most of my thoughts concerned upgrading my pc to minimum spec at least and when to go visit low yat for the necessary items. merv had also offered me his second hand rma'd asus motherboard which didn't help calm my excitement.

then an idea (from merv, again): why not go to low yat tonight? i didn't have the cash, but i certainly had the plastic. that pretty much put me over the holding-back threshold, and immediately we flew to low yat, all 4 of us, for some hardware shoppin'.

i got meself a radeon 9800 pro, and a piece of 512mb ddr-400 ram. needless to say i was rather pleased with myself. gigi, the cycom girl at the counter, also offered a 3.0e processor at merv's recommendation, but i declined, not having the funds to manage that kind of debt at the moment.

2nd gratifying moment. things were starting to look up.

so all i could think of after that was to get home and get everything up and running. took the elevator back down to the basement, paid for parking, and we were ready to leave.

as soon as i drove out of the parking bay, i suddenly realised something was amiss. "where is my parking ticket?", i thought. my brain quickly scanned the near past in some broken synapse, and i realised that i could not recall having taken the ticket out of the payment machine.

horrified, we zoomed back to the machine. but we were too late. it was gone. we double checked everywhere, every corner of the machine, every nook and cranny of the car, but it was lost forever. someone beat us to it. mofo!

that incident cost me 50 ringgit. so there goes all the gratifying parts down the drain. we were already late, and henry might miss his date. but my brain took a forced break at the time, and i couldn't bring myself to push my driving skills.

henry, i hope your date went well. :P

so i got home that night, and fixed up my new gear without much hassle. couldn't get windows to boot, so i was forced to do a complete reinstall (twice!). needless to say, i couldn't start having fun with my new game right there and then.

*sigh*

fortunately, things started looking up the following day. but that's another entry.

beyond underdark

Neverwinter Nights (NWN) official campaigns (OC) are now officially finished. i loved the plot twists in underdark, and i'm itching to try out the premium modules. don't have the funds for it yet though.

moving on, i've gotta think about how to create a richer NWN experience. besides the multiplayer party of 3, there are tons i can do. been looking into installing the CEP (community expansion pack) on the server to support a whole range of custom objects like new hairstyles and clothing. but that i'll probably enable once we finish off our multiplayer OC storyline. don't forget, i'll need to find proper modules that support the CEP.

besides that, i could also join one of the many persistent worlds (PW) online. these are basically something like MMORPG worlds, with things to do and people to meet. Every NWN PW world is custom built, with different sets of rules and abilities.

can you imagine the number of hours i'll waste on these activities?!

anyways, fish (JL) and i were discussing a few days ago about our respective solo campaign characters. since Shadows of Undrentide (SoU, first NWN expansion)'s storyline requires a fresh character, he was wondering how he'd want to transfer items from his OC character to his new one. one simple way is to save his OC character and then logon to the bangsar.net NWN server and leave his stuff there. then he'd be able to load his fresh character and pick them up, then start off his SoU campaign with that character. now NWN doesn't restrict you from using your original character from OC, or any type of character for that matter. if you do that however, it'll hurt your SoU, and ultimately Hordes of the Underdark (HotU) experience.

something else that we were thinking about was how to override the character in a save game. let's say there's this particular part of the game where you're having utmost difficulty, and need a more souped up version of your NWN self.

i only just realised this: every save game has a player.bic file which i think contains the character information. you might be able to override this file with another from your localvault directory. never tried it before though, so proceed at your own risk. :P

how did i just find that out? i was copying save games from home to my office pc this morning. we're having a disaster recovery test today, and most of it is just waiting. so instead of waiting, why not NWN? :D

neverwinter nuts

hordes of the underdark has pretty much glued me to this very computer. i was up till very 'early' this morning, getting some good progress in chapter 1 and 2.

"what was lost has now been found".

let's talk about what really makes this expansion special. item crafting! although my paladin character does not have that particular skill, there are ways to get your equipment beefed up with the right amount of gold. my holy avenger hastes me, and is keen on critical hits. makes me feel downright invincible.

on a different topic, i've installed the spamlookup plugin for MT. it works great! all the mad trackback spam has so far been blocked, and since installing 2 days ago i've only had to moderate 2 comments. a far cry from the hundreds of trackback spam i had to deal with every single day.

besides the fact that it actually works, this plugin comes with a set of documentation much more complete than the other plugins like MT-Blacklist. at least you get a sense of what the plugin can do.

hopefully i'll never have to think about spam again. whee!

mmmm

going out for dinner with the gang soon, so let's work up an appetite.

avanti, the italian restaurant in sunway hotel, is truly a unique experience. prices may be a bit steep, but you pay for the ambience and class. skip the grill as it is nothing new, but be sure to try the pastas. you'll never find pasta as rich as the ones served here.

let us not forget the singing chefs that make their rounds every half hour. supposedly they cook at lunch and perform in the evening. somewhat unbelievable, looking at how superbly they sing (they're philipino btw), but i'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

ok, now that my tummy is growling, let's talk about other things.

finally watched batman begins last night. it was great. superb. stupendous. i don't have to watch batman & robin to say how much of an improvement this was compared to the previous batman movies. very nice.

fight scenes were a bit headachy though. and i keep thinking dawson when i see katie holmes. argh.

i've recently cancelled my visa gold card. some dubious net transactions just poppep up on my bill. i remember making some proper ones before, but i wasn't sure if it was with this particular card. in any case, things like this have happened before. only reason i can think of is that the sites i've made payments to were hacked. otherwise there should be no way that anyone could've gotten hold of my cvv2 number.

i've finished playing the shadows of undrentide NWN campaign. playing paladin is so cool, and the items you can find in the game are unbelievable. imagine finding a holy avenger sword in some unmarked chest. yum.

time to start hordes of the underdark. wish i wouldn't lose my gear in the beginning though.

the road to recovery

is a long one. filled with all sorts of traps too. things that lure the taste buds.

it's friday. 6 days before, my nose wouldn't stop running. monday came, and i was feeling lethargic, with a superman underwear throat (i.e. bright red). got my mc for a day, which was spent playing shadows of undrentide. i seem to have recovered by nightfall.

10pm. 12am. 2am. was unable to sleep, probably due to the two swigs of ho yan hor tea i took before going to bed. hours passed as i reflected on the stupid things i've made in the past, and pondered on the things i need to do in the morning.

only started getting woozy about 6.30am. :/

evening came. i was getting severe stomach cramps. tried to endure, even while driving. i broke down at 5am. relief came 2 hours later.

moral of the story so far: too much tea is bad.

it's friday. and i still have my flu.

too much work is bad too.

Possible movies to be made: The Banoffee Identity, The Banoffee Supremacy, The Banoffee Ultimatum, Banoffee Begins, Revenge of Banoffee, Banoffee of Brothers, Banoffee Jones' Diary, My Sassy Banoffee.

Possible movie quote that got axed:
Darth Vader: Luke, I ate your banoffee....
Luke: Nooooooooooooooooooo

ID4: Today, we celebrate our independence day...with banoffee for dessert

Morpheus: You have a choice Neo. You take the banoffee, and you never have to worry about anything but sinful dessert. You take the red pill, and I'll show you how mass orgies in Zeon are like.

stress

i've promised myself that i'd work only from 8 to 5. within those nine hours, work is top priority. this restriction was placed upon myself in order to save my sanity.

doesn't seem to be working though.

this self-imposed rule may have given me more hours to do other things, but even now as i sit at home in front of my pc, i still feel there are many things that could've gone better. many things that i could've planned properly. many things that i didn't have to promise. many things that i shouldn't need to think about.

i can't make everyone happy. i am only one person. i must request for assistance. and i have.

and it comes in the form of an assistant.

an assistant who can't do programming.
an assistant who doesn't like to do programming.
an assistant older than me.

and i have no right to complain, it seems. i'm not even supposed to do programming. i'm supposed to rely on the understaffed pool of programmers.

and there aren't any young 'uns available, after all.

it's time to be more assertive.
it's time to forget about respecting the elderly.
it's time to delegate.
it's time to learn to say no.

it's time to become a manager. without the extra fringe benefits.

too hot for common sense

The stage is set. The private NWN server is now ready.

Problem is, i don't have any players that can log in. For the moment, i was expecting a two-person party consisting of myself and my sister. However, my sister's notebook did not seem to agree.

Sony Vaio PCG-GRZ*: Fatal flaw

Based on complaints from GRZ users everywhere, it seems that this particular notebook model has a very strong tendency to overheat and cause immediate shutdown of the machine.

One simple reason: dust buildup. Dust goes in unfiltered through the air intake, and gets stuck on the heat sinks that are placed right before the exhaust. Hence, the air works hard to cool down the dust, but the heat sinks remain hot. Or something like that.

Solution: clean it up. Based on instructions found here, we can hopefully get the machine up to optimal levels. In the long run, I think throwing in some thermal compound somewhere will help lots. So, anyone wanna go to Low Yat?

PS: Ezlan.net seems to have lotsa nice techie tips. Gotta look through 'em sometime.

need for rpg

Hey hey...

Just spent two hours trying to get my workstation back online. Somehow the TCP/IP settings got corrupted, and I had to follow some intricate steps on how to get it back up.

I'll never look down on the floppy drive again.

All for the glory of Neverwinter. Not being able to continue our adventures on Norrath, I was looking into preparing a local private Neverwinter Nights server on this box. The installation of the Linux binaries on FreeBSD is pretty straightforward; just installed a new hard drive to make space for the game data.

The big problem was totally unrelated: stopping NWN clients from authenticating with the central NWN servers. I only have one CD key, and wanting to play with my siblings on the LAN doesn't justify paying an extra RM 139 x 2. Instead of scouring the net for a list of ports to block, I decided to take the easy route and install TCPView Pro 1.06 to monitor connection from the NWN program.

And that was enough to screw my PC over.

Fortunately, I still have net access on the other workstations to find some solutions. After trying a few, which involved formatting DOS floppies on BSD to copy over, I settled with a solution posted somewhere. Check the extended section for details.

Oh well, back to work.

Problem:
Can't connect to the network. Your connection says you are connected, but no packets go through at all. Your connection's "Connection Status" info does not show anything about your IP address. Clicking on Repair gives you "Failed to query TCP/IP settings" or something like that.

Solution:
Restart your PC into Safe Mode with Networking.

Edit your registry. Delete the following keys:-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/Winsock2

Open the nettcpip.inf file in your %winroot%/inf folder (%winroot% is usually c:/windows).
Find the [MS_TCPIP.PrimaryInstall] section. Change the Characteristics value from 0xA0 to 0x80.

Open the properties of the network connection you want to fix. In the General tab, click on the Install button. Click on the Have Disk button, and point the location to %winroot%/inf. After that select TCP/IP (not version 6).

Now you would notice that you can uninstall TCP/IP! Do that, then restart the PC.

Go back to your network connection, and install TCP/IP again as per the above. After another reboot, you should be up and running.

strangely quiet

Office deserted. Only 3 remain. We cannot move, for the destination is fraught with danger. Well, not really.

Due to expiring contracts, the entire project team is moving 12 floors down to join our FI, MM, PM, BW, and etc. counterparts. We'll have an entire wing to ourselves, except for the ERP head, admin folk, and squatters from another division.

Problem is, the squatter area has momentarily extended into what should be our new cubicles.

Oh well, I could use some relaxation up here, not being able to do any work since all my documents are already there.

Anyway, life's been moving along pretty fast, since there's always something to do. Maybe a little too fast. At home, I've been rewatching Star Wars eps 4-5, with 6 to happen this afternoon. Oh, gotta clean the house up first tho, as we'll be having visitors again. Also been playing Shadow of Rome, which is great. Playing Octavianus is challenging, somewhat exciting, but Agrippa's role is much much more action packed (i.e. bloody). I guess that makes me a closet sadist.

Was playing Champions of Norrath with my sis, but the disc hung at one point and we couldn't proceed. Can't play Resident Evil Outbreak File #2 either, as that didn't even start up at all. Time to go see Mandy, our favorite PS2 shopkeeper.

In terms of reading, I've yet to wrap my Galaxy Express manga. Have not seen any new releases of the anime series out. Think I'll go update my collection of Ichigo 100% later. Started reading Eternal Sabbath, which is about some experimental clones who've achieved immortality somewhat, having extra mental powers as a side effect.

It's now 12.18. Another 42 minutes to burn.

Serenade to my banoffee

Oh dearest banoffee
How do I crave thee
With firm meringue top
Laced with chocolate drips
Encrusted in soft and crumbling pie
A luscious core
That hides the sweetest of banana slices
Entrenched in glorious, oh glorious toffee
And a price that's far from free
To suffer heartburn, after consuming thee...

rainy day

it was a lovely morning. birds chirpin; trees swaying gently in the breeze of dawn. however, towards noon i sensed an ominous presence coming ever so closer; a depraved being that will not stop till all grounded things are marked by its acidic touch.

the evil qumulonimboos has arrived.

i did not sense danger then, as the creature sprayed its wrath upon the land. it was only when an annoying buzzing sound sent alarms ringing in my head. i picked up the apartment intercom receiver.

"hello, sir."
"yes?"
"your car is parked at the wrong place."

the cruel (but awfully stupid) security guard's sentence sent a shiver down my spine. i was expecting this, but not so soon.

"which car?"
"uhh.. let me check."

he starts asking his alien friends in his blubbering native language.

"the red kancil, sir."
"and who reported this?"
"the owner."

now that was the last straw. was the Nice Neighborly Treatly not signed moons ago? it was shocking, but i calmed myself to find more truths within his claim.

"are you SURE?"
"uhh, no it was the management staff."

figures. the enigmatic building manager and his cronies are behind this. they've been ruling colony Prima 16 with an iron fist, handed down from a legacy of idiotic leaders. the squabbling factions within the senate of residents didn't help either. their eternal bickering only led to more legislation which lacked sense, common or other.

"whatever."

i hung up. "this is stupid", i thought. they didn't mind my blue vessel, bearing the Neighborly Seal of Peace, to reside within our neighbor's domain. yet these nepalese bastids and their puppeteers are immediately at arms when my red or silver shuttles make a short stop at its port of call. really, these pests stop short at nothing to ruin a relationship between two peaceful neighbors.

i feared the ruin of this colony is just beginning. no, it has always been in motion. only now it reveals the true horror of its intentions.

later, when returning from a round trip to the Sri Hartamas constellation, i was stopped at the entry checkpoint into the colony. it was then that i knew how deeply rooted qumulonimboos' influence was among us.

"sir, you cannot park somewhere else. you must park at your own place."

god, don't these guys know when to stop?

"what's your problem? the owner let us park there. why is the management so kaypoh?"

"sir, you cannot park somewhere else. you must park at your own place."

"can't you LISTEN to what i'm saying? see this sticker here? it plainly states that i am to park at that owner's lot!"

"this car, yes. other cars, no."

i groaned loudly. my mind was just teeming with cuss words that i just wanted to throw into that dark face. but for now, the situation requires finesse and more importantly, composure. who knows what the dictators will do if i erupted now.

for the moment, i just want to get away from that sick blue uniform.

"fine."

without a further glance, i lurched the vehicle forward in what seemed like some form of rebellion. thrusters ablaze with fury, i took the vessel down into the depths of this illusion called home.

nothing in particular

fma reflections: here.

watched ep 3 last thursday. general opinion was that the movie ain't so great, but a must see anyhow. hayden could use some acting lessons, but the cg was awesome enough to counter.

finally got playlists to work on my 6230, no thanks to nokia. it's no wonder how third party software like mobimb can flourish: the firmware developers at nokia are just horrendous! they keep developing new comms protocol for their phones, but never even think about backward-compatibility when designing the tools, i.e. nokia pc suite.

it's too bad the phone itself is nice. otherwise i might've considered a sony ericsson, or even a mo tuo luo la!

oh well, back to searching for a new theme.

no sleep, more happy

meetings can be unexpectedly refreshing early in the morning. especially when things went quiet well. so well that the sleepless state i was in last night seemed nothing.

was even tempted to post an entry at 4.30am.

thinking back, there could be a few reasons why i couldn't sleep last night:

1 - work. was somewhat agitated about this morning's meeting. guess i didn't have to worry after all.

2 - the golem's eye. the second book of the bartimaeus trilogy. i was at the climax. didn't want it to end. so ended up finishing the book anyhows. :P

3 - bratja (brothers). a very emotionally charged song from the full metal alchemist OST. it had its full effect when played during the FMA recollections episode, and just playing it back on winamp brings back some lingering sadness.

think the main reason was 3, which was used as an excuse to finish up 2. :P

anyway, somehow, i still managed to wake up and get to work on time, in a somewhat dazy mood. sat in my cubicle, added some last minute touches to my presentation slides. then came morning talk. guess i didn't mention this before: the project managers made it a point to have some sort of morning gathering every wednesday. to keep us close and informed as a team, i guess.

man, i just wanna get close to the chicks.

anyway, this morning one of the consultants just got back from NZ, and he even gave us a slideshow picture presentation. needless to say, 2 weeks of pics were a lot. and the slideshow timer didn't help either.

one interesting comment was made, which i somehow related to Merv, but i forget. oh well.

also, looks like i won't be seeing kylie next month, due to her illness. talk about bad timing.

i do hope she gets well soon. and not only due to mainly masculine reasons.

*same day edit*
i wanted to put in a link for the fma reflections torrent, but i can't seem to find nanashi-fansub's bt site. oh well, you'll just have to go to their irc channel.

also, i forgot to mention that i have a new assistant/subordinate now. she's way older than me though, so i feel it's a bit weird, and somehow self-imposedly challenging (paranoia at work). not really my first time having a team to command either, but this is different. gotta play my cards correctly, otherwise many emotionally charged situations may arise. and i'm not good with those.

"p" word

ooo... long time no blog. and as always, when that happens, it's time to report in reverse chrono order.

due to the sudden increase of interest in my tagboard (from 0 to 2 pax), i spent most of last night trying to code it into some free tagboard service. only at the end however did i realise that i couldn't make it as nice as i would like, since there are some built-in javascript security thingies in place which wouldn't let it work correctly if linked from a different site.

so it boils down to either scrapping the project or having it such that every person who signs up will have to place a special file on their website to do some javascript loading. somehow, even with its minor shortcoming, the latter seems a better option.

just before that, i just started reading 'the golem's eye' which is part 2 of the bartimaeus trilogy by jonathan stroud. the first book was good stuff, but so far i haven't seen the similar excitement in this one. yet.

yesterday, we decided to play squash, my sister and i. lasted only 10 seconds.

luckily this time, she paid for it. :D

and to cap this entry off, a short poem:-

oh "p"...
how you elude me...
months of rumors...
depresses me...

but "p"...
you seem so close now...
with the hope of $$$...
right into my banky...

:P

zuótiān

hm.. i was expecting some entries by our guesties last night, but i guess i'll start. :P

yesterday: monday. wish it was work and play, but it was more like work and study. it's back to school for the bunch of us, having our first mandarin lesson last night (well, for me and my sis at least).

the first class mainly took us through pronounciation, and it was bloody tough. having to vocalise every romanised consonant into something meaningful is like trying to unlearn the 3 languages i've studied so far.

hopefully, it'll be a lot easier when we get into the sentence structures and proper use of vocab. kinda expecting it will.

anyway, i'm now so much poorer. but at least thanks to my little sis, we can still afford a few more squash balls. squash tonight anyone?

ps: ring 2 ain't as good as its jap counterpart.

welcome to the gate of resentment

i am izuko, guardian of the gate.

thou hast 3 choices.
1st: enter paradise and wait to be reborn,
2nd: return as a ghost to haunt the earth for eternity,
or 3rd: pack thy makeshift cinema and return the equipment to thy office.

how shalt thou choose?

...
suffice to say, i'm forced to choose the 3rd. monday cometh.

at least not before watching the j-movie Sky High, from which that short snippet was from. same concept and background as the manga, but not directly related. so basically, you can watch the movie or read the manga in any possible way you choose (except by skipping chapters and whatnot), but still enjoy all of them.

anyways, see ya back at work. *sigh*

ps: grab the manga from omanga. get the movie off some torrent site.

Tribute to Christopher Reeve

Just got home from work, and Superman II was playing on Astro. Kind of brings back the good feeling of growing up wanting to be Superman (maybe with the exception of a certain MOX employee who wanted to be Supergirl). Kind of late for a tribute article since he's already passed on, but thanks for making us believe in ourselves for the better.

helpless

just got home from dinner. witnessed an accident on the section 16 residential strip.

there was a casualty. soft-pawed, and groomed fur. we passed helpless, watching it roll back and forth in pain. the images of it in my mind are just tearing my heart apart.

not sure what exactly happened. from my distance, it seemed like a playful chase of two cats turned fatal.

at least.. the other one got away safely.

for now, i gotta just stop thinking about it. and later, take note of any vets nearby.

the legend continues

my sis and i just finished playing a game of squash at the apartment court. yep, she just bought her prince racket for quite cheap, and it's even lighter than mine at half the price.

anyway, as you can see, it's 6.30, whereas we booked the court for this entire hour. no, we weren't tired. in fact, we weren't really going at it since it was her first time playing.

this time, it wasn't my fault. :P

due to the poor design of the court, many squash balls have been lost up in the ... ramparts? something like that.

that makes it 5-6 balls gone up from this household. i'm already used to making a conscious effort not to scoop the ball, but i guess it's not just me alone.

maybe i should write a letter to management to claim my balls. uhh.. that didn't sound right.

books galore

i'm so strapped for cash this month. all due to the roadshow claims coming back late and the sudden annual fee charges. not to mention tmnet's sudden decision to charge me my arrears via autodebit.

it's tough being poor.

farewell Time book sale. farewell eating out every day. saraba da.

yay for hemlocke for bringing me things to read. :D finished drowned wednesday, and i guess i'll start on that stroud trilogy soon.

anyways, welcome guest blogger bo.. i mean Merv. i bet he'll make a huge impact with our readers. multiple connotations included. :D

here's an open question: what do you do when you have supposedly unintentionally led someone on?

FINALLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY....the gates of Purrgatory have been opened to me by the Mephistophilic Kayu. Stuck at the heavenly (read: rusted) gates of YK, I bide my time by sharing with those who willingly spare time to read this column. My first entry for this blog, a haiku:

Natans shooting lights,
Ninjas giggling ever so ungracefully,
I combust internally...

lazy start, busy end

woke up. had only 4 hours of sleep (jean reno's fault). decided to stay out half a day. continued sleeping. woke up at 10. continued onimusha 3. :P

in the meantime, stacked bits of stuff to do into my bag. gotta draft a letter to hsbc, cancelling my cards, draft a letter to maybank to try and get my annual fees waived (for good, hopefully), and to go low yat and ask those cycom buggers what the feck happened to my sister's webcam! it's been 2 months and there's still no news on the rma. i'm going to demand for a replacement!

so back to onimusha. it's amazing how the cg characters match the facial features of their real counterparts. can't say the same about their voices though, cuz i haven't really heard them speak elsewhere before. maybe jean reno's french sounded good enough though.

realised relatives coming to visit soon. got my sister to sweep, then i mopped while she cleaned the tiles (the noisy ones) with ajax. :P hosed down the balcony and all that. it's tough trying to roll 50m of cheap hose.

it was too late to continue the game, so we went swimming for a while.

it's now late, and i still haven't touched the ps2. arg! just got back from dinner anyhow, after a short trip to the irb branch in kelana jaya. it was packed. people have been there since 6, waiting for their numbers to be called. my mom's income was not much, so she didn't really care, but i decided to just check a few things with some colleagues instead of waiting in line. trivial things like rounding the cents may mean a big deal (to our dear government).

oh btw, don't mess with b. a. baracus, mess with messenger.

get the messpatch, and get the toaster for winamp if you hate windows media player. if the popups annoy you, just go into its plugin settings and uncheck the 'enable toasts' option.

ooh, seems that my dad's car just overheated. let's see if he needs help!

space symphony maetel

i just caught a glimpse of the opening of space symphony maetel. simply breathtaking. but it shows a preview of more logical breaks within the matsumoto leiji universe. *sigh*

in order not to waste time, i think i'll continue watching the movies, and then start with my viz manga. what should come next would be space symphony maetel and galaxy railways. i think.

i'll indulge in the tv series as and when live-evil releases episodes. think it'll take a long while though, as they've many other long-running titles to do, like yawara.

oh well, back to work.

in search of a timeline

wow.. been long since my last post. nothing much has happened i guess, 'cept for work. trying to trace what i've done would be a pain, so i'm just going to churn out the next few memories in no particular order:-

% thursday was a public holiday for maulidur rasul, the prophet's birthday. brings back to mind the 'thou shalt not celebrate birthdays for it is sin' debate. anyway, the night before was spent playing mahjong for hours at Merv's place... to a point where my brain stopped working sometime at 1.30am. "glc-working hours conditioning". nevertheless, we continued for a bit.

% on thursday itself, i was out the entire morning, waking up to find my sister gone to lumut for a weekend regatta. mom was also out with a friend, so i was left at home with the lil bro. i think the only conversations we had involved me telling him to study. or do his project. or study. watched "mel brook's history of the world part i" which i borrowed from masrey.

% also watched the galaxy express 999 movie. based on archived conversations on animesuki, i should refrain from starting on the 2nd and 3rd movies until i've either read the original manga or watched the original tv series. so far live-evil has fansubbed the first 6 episodes, but the next 100+ are nowhere in sight.

somehow, i've researched the series so much to see how everything fits in, that i may already know the ending after the ending (yes, there're so many endings and alternate realities/versions!).

guess i'll also have to shelve the viz manga i bought. supposed to be a sequel too. :O evil viz! evil!

% cleaned up my downloads drive. got rid of the first 3 seasons of smallville cuz they were just taking too much space. started some downloads to fill up some of the gaps in some manga and anime. unfortunately, i still can't find certain episodes of inu yasha. bah.

moin moin

here i am, all sunburnt and tan-lined, from a weekend of sailing at the mucky beaches of Port Klang. it was great, having as many as 14 yachts of different sizes having as many as 9 crew members each go at each other for cans of beer.

i had the courtesy of being part-time crew member for a skipper from Germany, altho he's been living in this country for years now. part-time cuz they don't seem intent on taking me back. not that i care; i hate it when they blabber on in their native tongue without giving a damn for their non-guten tag crew.

ignoring that fact and that he's not so good, the overall experience was an astounding one. the people, the atmosphere, the excitement. the glare of the sun, the smell of the sea breeze in your face. when the heat is on, we usually forget each others names and get each others' attention via finger pointing, calling "you", or even foot nudges.

but it's been many years since i've sailed competitively, and i feel kinda beaten up. while my mind's totally fresh, i can barely walk up and down a flight of stairs.

well, that's one weekend down. the club's going to have its races bi-weekly it seems, so i can't wait for the next session.

tho.. i still have to worry about the week ahead.

anyway, friday night was interesting. had a project milestone celebration program in the afternoon at the singgahsana hotel with dinner included, then a short stop at merv's place to give him a pre-birthday surprise, then off to watch Robots at the IMAX theatre. point to note: don't watch IMAX if it's not 3d. if you have to, get a seat far far at the back. the sheer size of the screen can kill yer eyesight. :/

right

i'm at this gas station, right.

this guy was yelling at the counter guy asking him to refund the balance charged to his credit card (seems the balance couldn't fit into his tank). a simple question really: 'why is it so hard for you to refund some of my money when it is always so easy for you to take it?'.

it's not just at the gas station. everywhere we go we use our cards charging to them. just swipe/insert and sign.

but why is it so hard to credit back any certain amount? protocol? rules? more passwords to key into the machine? perhaps more thought should be given to the customer, since there's already some existing problem to deal with.

anyways...

my download of final fantasy piano collections finally finished. AND, i can now watch smallville season 4 up to episode 10. yay!

remind me to take out the boxes of chocs from my glove compartment in my car.

hypnotuned: VIII - eyes on me, VIII - fisherman's horizon, VIII - succession of witches, VIII - find your way, IX - eternal harvest, IX - vamo' alla flamenco, IX - you're not alone, IX - final battle, IX - melodies of life, X - to zanarkand, X - thunder plateau, X - via purifico, X - suteki da ne.

disease

Woke up with terrible aches. Still managed to get up and go to Bangi, but my health deteriorated further.

By midday, I could barely walk straight. It's been a long while since I got this sick.

Reminds me of a time when I almost passed out in my apartment toilet in LA. Had to knock my head against the wall to keep myself up.

I guess vitamins are in order.

Well, managed to get half day MC for today. Will have to return to Bangi tomorrow though. :/

red dots

This looks to be a very very lazy week.

Monday: Took a day trip to Temerloh up north for another roadshow session. Seems we missed a spot earlier. Left home at 6.30am, to get onto a van at the office at 7am. Got there, had a surprising burst of nervousness but quickly recovered by alienating the podium. Tried to look for ikan patin masak tempoyak, but the restaurant we went to didn't have any. Seems that durians weren't in season either.

Tuesday: Got into work rather late, since it's supposed to be a travelling day anyway. Sat in my cubicle for the rest of the day. A lot of hoohah at the lobby, preparing for the PM's visit on Thursday. Don't see why they have to block roads just for this; that's what sirens and squad cars are for.

Wednesday-Thursday: Will be spending my time in Bangi to attend a course on Interpersonal Skills: Giving Feedback. Yay.

Friday: Meeting in the morning, and work again. Friday-style.

Saturday and Sunday won't be so laid back though. Taking part in a small regatta at RSYC.

I hope my pimples clear by then. Sudden outbreak for no apparent reason.

doh

before i realised it, i've just been charged the annual fee for 2 gold cards! :O

it's amazing how time flies. grr.

and after that and the hotel charges i need to claim back, i seem to have spent more than i can afford! :O

!@#!#$%#$%^

fortunately, my sister is still in the black. :P

anyway... stayed home today. still feeling lethargic from the roadtrip. gave me some time to catch up on smallville and clean up my room a bit and at the same time gather documents for last year's tax declaration.

think i might need a shredder.

lessee.. woke up late today, since it's supposed to be a traveling day. got to work. got my pic taken for mykad. had a meeting, supposedly about phase 1 support but somehow we never got to talking about my area. guess i'm that good. or worse.

had a few runins with some mofos on the road during lunchtime. nothing unusual.

presented some stuff to some users in the afternoon. was up at work till 7.30 helping a colleague with her financial postings.

dinner with the gang. tom yam.

short session. bloody car alarm goes haywire at home. shorter session.

full moon sway...

... gently in the night of one fine day ...

i'm back. tired. sigh.. work's going to feel odd tomorrow.

t'was an interesting experience, getting out of town to meet the users. it's also good to know that none of them wanted to crucify us.

bought meself darren shan's third trilogy and the first 3 volumes of viz' galaxy express manga from mph for the trip. finished the purple book within the first two nights. don't want to open my manga yet: thinking of wrapping them up nicely first, since they're proper licensed manga.

i.e. bloody expensive.

think those'll cover my tax redemption for 2005.

i wonder where my 2004 forms went..

anyway.. trip itself was uneventful. slept over at the grand continental the first night in melaka. no incidents. went out for dinner. got lost looking for a place that supposedly existed 20 years ago.

while we're at it, let me tell you of a certain driver who's really really bad. so mu
